True Blood ( Listen ? / I ) ( English for "True Blood") is an American drama - television series with horror - and Fantasy -elements by Alan Ball . It was first broadcast on September 7, 2008 on HBO . True Blood is set in the present and is based on the book series Sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris . The series is about the emergence of the vampires in American society and the coexistence with humans. True Blood is set in a small fictional town in Louisiana and shows parallels to the emancipation of homosexuals and the treatment of the black population in the reactionary southern states of the USA. The focus is on the love story between Sookie Stackhouse, a fundamentally good young woman equipped with telepathic skills, and the vampire Bill Compton. The series ended after seven seasons in late August 2014. Audio file / audio sample

action

The basic idea behind the series is TruBlood , a synthetic blood originally developed by Japanese scientists for medicine. The drink is gaining popularity among the vampires who have hid on the fringes of society. Because they are no longer forced to bite people to survive, they can show socially conform behavior and integrate into the majority society.

The opinions of vampires are divided: vampires willing to emancipate, who have a very positive attitude towards modern society, and vampires who prefer to indulge in their sexual excesses and attack people. Here, too, the series makes use of a trick: the simple vampire bite does not turn people into vampires; this requires a complex ritual. Many people, especially women, see strong eroticism in the bite.

The self-contained seasons of the series each deal with a large, mythological theme. In the first season, a vampire-hating murderer disrupts life in Bon Temps. In the second season it is a deeply evil maenad equipped with mass hypnotic and shape-changing abilities . In the third season, the vampires are threatened by a power-hungry and V- addicted dynasty of werewolves led by a vampire king who does not believe in the emancipation of vampires. In the fourth season a powerful vengeful witch appears and in the fifth season the authority, which includes six chancellors and a guardian, appears.

First season

The series takes place in the fictional, with a descriptive name provided Bon Temps, a small town in the US state of Louisiana in Renard Parish , which is also fictional .

Waitress Sookie Stackhouse has an unusual ability to hear people's thoughts. She is thrilled when she meets her first vampire, Bill Compton, who visits the Merlotte’s bar , where she works, as a guest . She saves his life when a couple tries to pump his blood out to sell as a drug. Sookie feels more and more drawn to the mysterious Bill, much to the displeasure of her boss Sam Merlotte, who has had a thing for Sookie himself for a long time. When the couple seek revenge on Sookie and badly mistreat her, Bill saves her and gives her his blood to drink. As a result, Sookie's senses are more receptive to external stimuli and, in particular, to Bill's physical presence.

Maudette Pickens is murdered in Bon Temps, with whom Sookie's brother, the somewhat simple-minded womanizer Jason, had a relationship, which brings him under suspicion of murder. However, a video of the affair emerges that exonerates him. Another video also shows Maudette having sex with a vampire, but this video did not appear. A short time later, Jason's girlfriend, the waitress Dawn Green, and Sookie's grandmother Adele Morden also fall victim. Apparently all victims were open-minded towards the vampires, the two young women even had bite marks, which indicate a sexual relationship with vampires. Although there is no further evidence, the locals suspect a vampire as the perpetrator. This culminates in an arson attack by some backwoodsmen, in which three vampires and a Fangbanger die.

Jason makes his first experiences with the drug V , real vampire blood. V is a strong illegal drug that expands human consciousness and sharpens all senses like a vampire. When Jason wants to buy V , he meets Amy Burley in the vampire bar Fangtasia , who quickly turns out to be a V addict. He starts a love affair with her. Together they kidnap a vampire named Eddi so that they can draw his blood at will. Jason develops pity and sympathy for the vampire, but Amy stakes him in front of his eyes. When Amy is also strangled, Jason is again suspected of being a murderer.

Meanwhile, Sookie makes more acquaintances with other vampires. In Fangtasia , Bill saves her from another vampire whom Sookie used her mental abilities to convict as a thief, and kills him. For this serious offense he has to answer to the Magister, who is a judge and inquisitor for vampires rolled into one. He condemns Bill to create a new vampire, for which the whimpering girl Jessica Hamby is shown.

While Jason is in custody, his friend and colleague Rene Lenier approaches Sookie. When he tries to kill her, it becomes clear: Rene is the serial killer, full of hatred for vampires and vampire sympathizers. For this reason he killed his sister, a fang banger , and went to Bon Temps under a new name. There he murdered two other Fangbanger , Adele Stackhouse and the V- addict Amy. After their escape from Rene to a cemetery, Sam and Bill rush to her aid, even though it is broad daylight. Sookie finally manages to behead Rene with a shovel. Bill suffers severe burns from the sunlight, he is laid in an empty grave and covered with earth by her and Sam, while trying to save him. The next night, much to Sookie's amazement and delight, he stands at her door, completely healed.

Second season

In the second season, Sookie is attacked and poisoned by a mysterious creature. Bill drives her to Fangtasia , where Dr. Ludwig heals them. There Sookie discovers the detained V dealer Lafayette and offers her services in exchange for his release. Eric sends her to Dallas to find his creator Godric. In Dallas, she narrowly escapes an attempted kidnapping by a member of the Society of the Sun , a vampire-hating sect led by Reverend Steve Newlin and his wife Sarah. To find out if them captive and Godric, to make Sookie with Hugo, a human ally of the vampires in Dallas, on the way to the Church of the company of the sun . It turns out that Godric is actually there: albeit voluntarily. He wants to meet there the next day the sun to suicide to commit. After vampires storm the church to save him, Godric calls them back and goes back to Dallas to prevent a slaughter. Eric catches two bullets intended for Sookie with his body. Since she then sucks out the bullets and swallows his blood to save him, he can now, just like Bill before, feel her emotions. Godric later commits suicide on the hotel roof while watching the sun rise.

Meanwhile, Sookie's brother Jason, still mentally troubled by the murder suspicions and his stay in prison, was invited to a training stay by the Society of the Sun. There he is noticed positively by the Newlins and is supposed to become a new leader in the fight against the vampires. After Jason learns that his sister is being held prisoner, he turns against the Newlins and helps Sookie.

At Merlotte’s , Sam hires the new waitress Daphne Landry, who is just as much a shapeshifter as he is and with whom he starts a relationship. However, she is killed by Eggs, who is under the control of Maryann Forrester. This turns out to be a maenad , follower of the god Dionysus, who can plant wildness, madness and ecstasy in people in order to ultimately be able to meet their god. She casts a spell on the residents of Bon Temps, and violence and lawlessness pervade the city.

To master the maenad, Bill goes to the vampire queen of Louisiana, Sophie-Anne. She explains that maenads are actually seeking their own death in their attempt to meet their god. When Eric later visits the Queen, it is revealed that she has offered her blood for sale and Bill knows that Eric is dealing with it. Eric is supposed to sell the blood quickly and silence Bill before he finds out that she is behind it herself.

In a final excess of the citizens of Bon Temps, Maryann finally wants to meet her God and adorns herself as if for a wedding with an unwilling Sookie as maid of honor. To protect Sookie, Bill hands Sam over to the maenad. When Eggs stabs Sam with a rite knife and Maryann smears herself with blood, she becomes the mysterious creature from the beginning and tries again to kill Sookie. But suddenly a large horned ox stands in front of her. She believes she is finally facing her God. The bull rams one of his horns into her and turns into Sam, who rips out her heart. Maryann dies, breaking her spell on the city.

Bill invites Sookie to a restaurant and proposes to her. She doesn't accept right away, but freshes herself up in the toilet, where she decides to do so. When she returns to the table, Bill has disappeared.

Third season

With the help of Eric and the werewolf Alcide Herveaux, Sookie sets out to find Bill. This was abducted by V- addicted werewolves on the orders of Russell Edgington, the King of Mississippi . Russell wants information from Bill that will help him force the vampire queen Sophie-Anne to marry him. He's also interested in Sookie, who Bill keeps a file about in his house. To protect her, Bill breaks away from her and declares his allegiance to the King of Mississippi. It is only when he learns that Russell is not going to let go of Sookie that he breaks free to find her. With that he leads Russell and his wolves directly to her. Both are captured and Bill is said to suffer the true death due to his infidelity, which Sookie can prevent by killing Lorena, who is supposed to carry out the sentence. Both can flee. Sookie gives her blood to the completely exhausted Bill, who is however unconscious and drinks her almost to death.

Meanwhile Eric is betrayed to the Magister by Sophie-Anne, whose blood he is selling on her orders. Russell thinks little of the authority, the American Vampire League and their efforts to coexist with humans and kills the Magister. He also blackmailed Sophie-Anne with the vampire blood trade, so that she married him. At Russell's house, Eric discovers his father's Viking crown, which was stolen in an attack by werewolves that killed his entire family. He now knows that Edgington is behind the attack and stakes his partner Talbot.

Sam looks for his family and tracks them down in Arkansas. His parents are poor and uneducated. His brother, Tommy, is a shapeshifter like himself and is sent to dog fights to make money. Sam takes him in and gives him a job at Merlotte’s . But he is dissatisfied with Tommy's development, since he does not make an effort, lies and is constantly looking for arguments. When he loses patience and throws him out, Tommy steals all of his money. Sam chases him and finally shoots him.

Tara meets the vampire Franklin at Merlotte’s , who collects information about Sookie and Bill in Bon Temps on Edgington’s orders. The two sleep together. However, Tara realizes that Franklin is a psychopath who sees her as his vampire bride. He holds her prisoner, rapes her and wants to transform her. She has to muster all her strength and play the willing lover for him until she can finally free herself. Franklin follows her to Bon Temps, but is killed by Jason. Tara has had enough of the city and leaves.

Lafayette meets his mother's carer Jesus in the nursing home. He admits to be a witcher and to have had evil witches in his family. After a V trip together, Lafayette begins to hallucinate terrible things that Jesus believes may be real and that Lafayette has only become "more open" to them than he was before.

Jason suffers from killing Eggs. He's also having a hard time watching Andy be revered like a hero for taking the deed. He forces Andy to move him to the police station. During a rather random assignment in the drug mecca Hot Shot, he catches a drug dealer and meets the shy Crystal Norris. He falls head over heels in love with her. He also tells her about a planned raid. She then leaves Hot Shot with her violent fiancé Felton and asks Jason to take care of the remaining residents.

Sookie has lost all trust in Bill and ends the relationship. Thanks to her blood, he is able to walk in the sun for a few minutes and meets the fairy Claudine in a kind of intermediate realm, who tells him that Sookie has fairy blood in her. He tells Sookie about it. Eric now also knows what Sookie is: he found out about it from her cousin Hadley, who works for Sophie-Anne. He knows from Bill that protection from the sun is short-lived. Eric forges a plan to defeat the vengeful Russell: He captures Sookie and lures Edgington to Fangtasia with the promise that he will walk in the sun with the help of Sookie's blood. Since Russell is suspicious, Eric has to drink from Sookie and be the first to step out into the daylight. As soon as Russell follows him, Eric tied him up with silver to burn with him. However, Sookie saves Eric and eventually Edgington as well, because Eric does not allow him the peace after death. Instead, Russell is set in concrete. On the construction site, Bill tries to get rid of Eric by throwing him into another excavation and filling it with cement. With Pam's help, Eric breaks free and goes straight to Sookie, who is swearing to Bill that he will kill anyone who knows what she is for her protection. Eric tells Sookie that Sophie-Anne sent Bill to Bon Temps to find out what she was. Bill also had her beaten up so he could give her his blood. Sookie is devastated and sends them both away. She finds comfort in the fairy Claudine, with whom she disappears into the light.

Fourth season

Sookie is led into the realm of the fairies by Claudine. She finds out that the fairies hold people with fairy blood against their will. You manage to escape back to Bon Temps. Here she learns that she has been away for a whole year. Things have changed: Bill is now King of Louisiana after killing Sophie-Anne with the help of Nan Flanagan. He, Eric, and the American Vampire League work to win the trust of the people and undo Russell Edgington's act. Jason is now a cop and he sold Sookie's house. Tara has disappeared. Tommy plays the invalid and lives with Maxine Fortenberry. Alcide moved to Shreveport and lives there with Debbie, who stays away from V. Arlene's baby is here. Andy became addicted to V. Everyone went looking for Sookie and eventually thought she was dead.

Jesus is a witch and asks Lafayette to accompany him to a meeting of his witch circle. During the meeting, a dead bird is brought back to life. Bill finds out from an informant and recognizes the witches as a threat to the vampires. He orders Eric to take care of it. He then tries to threaten the witches, but is cursed and loses his memory. He escapes the coven and is found by chance by Sookie, who takes him home and hides him there. Sookie falls in love with the helpless, sensitive Eric, just like him with her and the two begin a relationship.

Tara, Jesus and Lafayette search for a counter-spell to stave off the wrath of the vampires. You must find that there isn't one, as Marnie - the leader - was possessed by a ghost. This is the spirit of the Spanish witch Antonia, who burned at the stake 400 years ago, condemned and desecrated by vampires within the Catholic Church and who then forced the vampires to go into the sunlight.

Jason looks after the kids in Hot Shot and brings them groceries. However, he is captured. Since the Werpanthers can no longer have offspring due to years of inbreeding, Crystal and Felton bite Jason with the mistaken assumption that he will become a Werpanther and could provide offspring with the women. He is then raped. With the help of one of the women, he escapes. On the run, he kills Felton and finally separates from Crystal. He is finally found completely exhausted by Hoyt and Jessica, the latter saves him with her blood. Jason is now sexually attracted to Jessica, who wants to experience more than just being with Hoyt forever. Jessica breaks up with Hoyt and sleeps with Jason.

Debbie feels lonely in Shreveport and convinces Alcide to join the local wolf pack with her. This is headed by Marcus Bozeman, who has a child with the shapeshifter Luna and lives separately from her. Marcus finds out that Sam and Luna are getting closer and declares the fight against him.

Tommy's and Sam's parents, Joe Lee and Melinda, are killed in battle by Tommy when they try to force him to dogfight again. According to the Navaho legend, this enables Tommy to transform himself into other people. In the form of Sam, he fires Sookie and sleeps with Sam's crush Luna. Sam finds out and banishes Tommy from his life. He tries to make up for his mistake by pretending to be Sam in a fight against the wolf pack for Marcus and taking his beating. Alcide finally intervenes against the unfair fight and brings the seriously injured Tommy to Sam. The two brothers forgive each other and Tommy dies. Sam wants revenge on Marcus, but is held in check by Alcide. Alcide is enraged, however, because he feels betrayed by Debbie, who stands by Marcus, and kills Marcus in an affect. Alcide breaks up with Debbie. She blames Sookie for everything and wants to kill her.

Antonia takes permanent possession of Marnie and starts a war against the vampires. She tries to get them outside in daylight, arming the coven with wooden ammunition, turning some of the Louisiana sheriffs into their mindless puppets, and unleashing them at the mortal audience at a public propaganda event for the American Vampire League. Opposite is Bill, who wants to protect his subjects. Marnie also makes Eric her tool and tells him to kill Bill. Sookie can prevent this at the last second by turning her fairy powers on Eric. As a result, every ban is lifted. He's the old man again and can remember everything. Sookie then realizes that she loves both Eric and Bill. She suffers a lot and decides in the last episode not to be with either of the two.

During a visit to Jesus' grandfather, a powerful sorcerer, he discovers that Lafayette is a medium for the spirits of the dead. Jesus can release Antonia's spirit from Marnie with a spell, so that all protective spells fall around Marnie and she can be killed by Bill and Eric. However, Marnie's mind takes over Lafayette's body. She asks Jesus to give her his magic powers and threatens him to hurt Lafayette. Jesus agrees and is stabbed to death by Marnie in the course of the transmission. Tara, Holly and Sookie summon the ghosts of their friends and families (including Antonia and Adele Stackhouse), who convince Marnie that the vampires are sufficiently punished with immortality. Marnie goes with the ghosts and finds peace.

Andy Bellefleur gets deeper and deeper into V- dependency until Terry persuades him. He meets a fairy in the forest and sleeps with her.

Nan Flanagan, who all the time has put the interests of the American vampire league, which is called by the vampire authority over the protection of the vampires of Louisiana, seeks Bill. She was expelled from the league and is under orders to bring true death to both Bill and Eric. She thinks that she will be killed afterwards and wants to found a union with them against the vampire league. She blackmailed both of them with her knowledge of Sookie's specialty as a fairy. Eric kills her human escort and Bill stakes Nan.

In the last episode, Debbie appears on Sookie's front door and shoots Sookie, but hits Tara, who is seriously injured. Sookie then shoots Debbie. The ghost of Rene appears to Arlene, who urgently warns her about Terry. Alcide discovers that Russell Edgington has escaped from his concrete prison. Pam is mad at Eric, who broke up with her to protect Sookie. Reverand Steve Newlin, who has become a vampire, stands at Jason's front door.

Fifth season

Tara is fatally injured and so Lafayette and Sookie ask Pam to turn her into a vampire. Pam agrees. Tara is anything but thrilled to have been turned into such a hated creature. She avoids her friends and instead finds access to her maker.

Debbie's body is buried in the garden by Lafayette and Sookie. Sookie admits the murder to Alcide, who in turn blames it on Marcus Bozeman.

Reverend Steve Newlin, newly minted vampire, confesses his affection to Jason and can only be brought to reason by Jessica's energetic defense of her "property". He is hired by the vampire authority as a PR man and successor to Nan Flanagan.

Eric and Bill are picked up by the Authority's security guards to be questioned about Nan's disappearance. Among them is Eric's "sister" Nora, who frees the two. However, all three are caught and captured as traitors to the "mainstreaming movement". Under the silver torture they are supposed to confess that they are actually followers of the original vampire Lilith, who according to the vampire bible represents the ruling creature. You can negotiate a deal with the Chancellors of Authority: They want to capture the escaped Russell Edgington, the greatest enemy of mainstreaming and human-vampire relations. They go in search of the 3,000-year-old vampire and find that he has been freed by a member of Authority. Bill can prevent Eric from staking Russell himself, and so they hand him over to authority, for which at least they are not sentenced to true death.

When Russell is about to be executed, it fails thanks to the help of the authority member Salome, and he instead kills Roman, the head of mainstreaming and custodian of authority. Then all chancellors are given the choice of following Lilith or suffering true death. All of them, including Eric and Bill, choose Lilith and, after drinking drops of her deity's blood, cause a bloodbath among people. Mainstreaming has therefore failed. To force this without calling human governments on the scene and starting a war, Bill proposes to destroy all TruBlood factories in what appears to be acts of terrorism. Eric appears to Godric, who urgently warns him about Lilith. Together with Nora, who joins him, he finds a way out of the building of authority.

The Shreveport wolf pack searches for its missing leader. Alcide confesses to having killed him and is said to be his successor. However, another wolf thinks he is entitled to this post. Strengthened by Russell's vampire blood, he defeats Alcide in a duel. He sees another pack of "V" perish in Shreveport and does everything in his power to become the pack leader. However, he only succeeds in doing this by killing his opponent - with the help of vampire blood.

Russell is the strongest vampire in authority. He tries to convince them all of the idea that they should walk in the sun, but falls on deaf ears. So he goes on a fairy hunt with his toy boy Steve Newlin. After drinking the fairy elder, he is elated and careless. Eric can finally take revenge and stake him.

Sookie learned from fairies that her parents were killed by a vampire who was lured by the scent of her blood on a sticking plaster. What's more, it was promised to this vampire named Warlow 300 years ago. This strengthens Jason's aversion to vampires, despite his affection for Jessica.

Bill is completely committed to Lilith. He drinks unabashedly from people and wants to become the leader of the new vampire movement, for which he was chosen by Lilith. So he kills one chancellor after another. To save him, Eric takes Sookie to the Building of Authority. But it is too late. By believing in Lilith, Bill feels free from guilty feelings towards his human family and from the thought of being a being from Hell, a mistake in God's plan. According to the vampire bible, vampires are the creatures chosen by God. Bill has eliminated all chancellors and drinks the vial of Lilith's blood completely empty. He dies a true death and rises from his puddle of blood as a kind of super vampire.

Sixth season

Everyone can escape from the authority building. The new Bill appears a short time later at Sookie, who distrusts him and stakes him, which he survives unscathed. He has a lot of new powers and the mission to save the vampire race.

That is sorely needed because Louisiana's Governor Truman Burrell has declared war on them. He has set up a camp to explore the skills and social life of vampires. Sarah Newlin fights by his side. Eric tries to arouse Burrell's understanding of the vampires by transforming his daughter Willa into one. But the governor locks her in the camp, like everyone else. To get revenge on Eric, he lets his sister Nora inject Hep-V - a newly developed hepatitis virus - whereupon she dies a true death. The large-scale annihilation of the vampire race is being prepared in the back room of the camp: Burrell has restarted the Tru Blood production. Nobody knows, however, that Hep-V is being added to the bottles. Eric manages to escape from the camp and by chance learns of the special mixture.

Sookie meets a seemingly nice man with fairy blood, who turns out to be Warlow. This tells her that he was once a fairy until Lilith turned him into a fairy-vampire hybrid. His vampire side regularly makes him suckle fairies, which he hates himself for. At the time, he had agreed with Sookie's ancestors that she should be his so that he could make a hybrid out of her too. When her parents found out about this plan, her father had decided that she should rather die. Warlow had killed Sookie's parents to save their life. A world collapses for Sookie.

One of Bill's new skills is being able to see into the future. And so he knows that all of his fellow vampires in the camp will die true death from sunlight. He tries to prevent this by commissioning a Tru Blood engineer to synthesize fairy blood. Sookie refuses to help him. That's why he lets Jessica kidnap Andy's fairy daughters. Unfortunately, Jessica cannot resist the temptation and drinks them all up. She herself is most appalled by her act and flees to Jason. However, Sarah Newlin ran into him with the intention of saving him by having sex. Sarah has Jessica arrested and taken to camp. When Bill discovers the disappearance of his offspring, he kills Burrell.

Sarah still sees herself as God's tool in the fight against the vampires. After the governor's death, she remains silent and does everything possible not to disrupt the operations in the camp and not to endanger the production and delivery of the Tru Blood . She even goes so far as to kill the owner of the Tru Blood factory in order to keep the mixture's secret.

Bill's last chance at fairy blood is Warlow. Although he comes into possession of his blood, the scientist cannot reproduce it. So Bill has to bring Warlow to camp so everyone can drink from him. The fairy-vampire hybrid is hidden by Sookie in the fairy realm, so Bill has to submit his proposal to her. Sookie asks her new friend to help the vampires for her sake. In return, he demands that she let him transform her into his own kind and stay with him forever.

After escaping from the authority building, Sam has to watch Luna die because she had exhausted herself. Shortly before her death, she asks him to keep her daughter Emma and not to hand her over to the wolf pack. The pack under Alcide's leadership makes claims and pursues the two. A group of young activists in support of the supernatural beings get into an argument and three of them are killed by werewolves. The fourth, Nicole, becomes Sam's lover and escapes with him and Emma. Alcide can't stand any more bloodshed. And so he lets Sam and Nicole go after the latter has realized that Emma belongs to her grandmother. To quench his pack's thirst for blood, however, he claims to have killed both of them. The lie is quickly exposed and Alcide is replaced as pack leader.

Terry, who killed his old friend Patrick, can't live with the guilt. Especially not when the pregnant wife of his victim comes to the Merlotte in search of him. So he hires a contract killer who is supposed to shoot him in the near future. Arlene tries to help her severely depressed husband by letting a vampire charm him into forgetting about the war and all its bad deeds. They spend a happy day together until Terry is shot.

Eric found Warlow and drank from him. Now he can enter the camp in daylight and free the vampires. He orders them to take revenge on the people. He himself kills the scientist responsible for the death of his beloved sister. Bill had no choice but to drink the vial of Warlow's blood as Eric thwarted his plans to take Warlow to camp. He reaches the room just in time, where Jessica, Tara, Pam, Willa and Steve Newlin, among others, are being held before Sarah Newlin opens the roof. All the vampires gather around Bill and drink what they save from him. Only Steve Newlin is pushed away and dies in the sun.

Sarah is found on the run from the vampires by Jason, who decides to let her go because she is not worth it. All other people in the camp were tortured and killed. The vampires are high on Bill's blood. This seems to have lost its abilities with the blood and to be the old one again. Eric breaks up with the others to be alone and to mourn Nora.

Sookie had already accepted Warlow's suggestion, but is now afraid to leave her friends. He is furious about her change of heart and tries to force her, but is stopped and finally killed by the new old Bill, who has also rediscovered his feelings for Sookie, and Jason.

When the strength of Bill's blood wears off, Eric is sunbathing in the mountains of Sweden. You can see it go up in flames. Pam leaves Tara and Willa and goes in search of him.

Six months later: Hep-V has spread. People are immune to it insofar as they cannot get it themselves. However, Hep-V positive people can transmit it to vampires. Another problem is the supply of Hep-V-free blood to the vampires. Some of them are now wandering the country in murderous gangs. Sam is mayor of Bon Temps and developed the proposal with Bill, who wrote a book about his divine experiences, that all humans should be tested for Hep-V and, in the event of a negative result, an exclusive partnership with a vampire for mutual benefit Benefit. Because the vampires suffering from Hep-V are now marauding through the country and can best be defeated by healthy vampires. Sam handed his bar over to Arlene. Sookie is now with Alcide and tries to lead a normal life. In the last scene you can see a horde of sick vampires approaching a party in front of Arlene's bar, in which vampires also participate and partnerships are established.

Seventh season

The Hep-V infected vampires attack the festival, killing Tara and kidnapping Arlene, Holly, and the pregnant Nicole. Eventually the sick vampires are called back by an unknown person. To cure Lettie Mae, Willa gives her some of her blood, so Lettie Mae Tara hallucinates and becomes addicted to it. So that she no longer has access to the vampire blood, her husband dissolves the protective bond with Willa. When Lafayette is on V with Lettie Mae for the last time, however, they both realize that it wasn't hallucinations and Tara wants to tell them something. Together with the Reverend Daniels they go to Tara one more time so that she can finally say goodbye to Lettie Mae in peace.

Meanwhile, the city's residents split into two groups to save them. Sookie, Alcide, Jason, Violet, Bill, Jessica, Andy, Adilyn and Sam are looking for the Hep-V vampires, but they are disturbed by everyone else who wants to destroy everything that is not human. Alcide is shot dead in one of these attacks. Maxine Fortenberry also dies after shooting Jessica in the shoulder and then being attacked by Violet. Holly is released because the vampires took her on a hunt.

Pam is looking for Eric and finally finds him in France, but the reunion is clouded because Eric is infected with Hep-V. Only when he learns that Sarah Newlin is still alive does he regain his courage to face life. The two return to Shreveport. In search of Sarah, Eric and Pam travel to Dallas, where they meet Amber, Sarah's sister, who is also infected with Hep-V. Through her, the two find Sarah, whereby Eric saves her from the Yakuza , but he and Pam are captured. He negotiates with them that they kill Sarah Newlin together.

In a joint action, Jason, Violet, Bill, Jessica, James, Sookie, Pam, Eric, Willa and two other vampires save the kidnapped Arlene and Nicole from Fangtasia, with Hep-V vampires feeding on Arlene and to the edge of it Bring death where she meets Terry. Eventually one of the sane vampires, Keith, rescues her. Later, Arlene meets with him.

Jessica has not drank blood since attacking Andy's children, so a gunshot wound does not heal. Only when her friend James Lafayette tunes in, he can convince her to go on living. Andy forgives her too and encourages her to go on living. When Jessica catches James and Lafayette having sex, she sleeps with Jason, which Violet overhears. She destroys Jason's house and disappears from there. She kidnaps Adilyn and Wade, who ran away from home, to her house. While trying to save her, Jessica and Jason are also captured. Eventually they are saved by Hoyt, who came back to Bon Temps to bury his mother.

Sarah Newlin has drank the antidote for Hep-V and heals her sister Amber by drinking from her. When Amber refuses to reveal where Sarah is, Eric kills her. With the help of Mr. Gus and the Yakanomo Corporation, he and Pam find Sarah in the former Fellowship of the Sun church. Eric drinks from her and heals. He and the Japanese make a deal that they will sell the blood as New Blood and cure the vampires.

Bill drinks from Sookie without both of them knowing that she is Hep-V positive. Now Bill is also infected and the disease is progressing faster than usual. Sookie asks Dr. Ludwig and Niall Brigand for help, but nobody can do anything for Bill. Sookie decides to spend the last few hours with Bill and they sleep together. When Sookie learns that Eric is cured, she asks him to give Bill the cure. However, this has to happen behind the back of the yakuza because they want to sell it. Sookie and Jessica take Bill to the basement of Fangtasia, where Sarah is being held. However, Bill decides not to take the cure, then he follows Jessica's request and releases her.

Hoyt breaks up with Brigette. Jessica tells him everything she made him forget. The two get back together. Brigette ends up with Jason. She makes it clear to him that he is a good person. Hoyt and Jessica decide they want to get married. So that Bill can be there, they do it the next day. Andy takes over the wedding ceremony. As Bill's next of kin, Andy inherits the house, but he promises that Jessica and Hoyt can continue to live in it for $ 1 a month.

The yakuza find out that other people know about Sarah Newlin and urge Eric to reveal who knows. Eric releases Sarah Newlin after Pam gives her her blood so she can find her anytime. Then the two kill the yakuza. Pam goes to Sarah and drinks from her to make her immune to Hep-V.

Sam and Nicole leave Bon Temps so their child can grow up in a safe environment. They move to live with Nicole's mother in Chicago, and Sam leaves Sookie a letter. He also leaves Andy a letter with his resignation.

Meanwhile, Bill meets with Sookie to explain why he wants to die. He wants a normal life for her and since she loves Bill, she can only have a normal life when he is dead. He suggests that she kill him with her light so that she can lose her light and be a normal person. At first Sookie is horrified, but then agrees. That night they meet in the cemetery, but Sookie decides to keep her light as it is part of her. She says goodbye to Bill and eventually stakes him.

Four years later: Eric and Pam sell Sarah Newlin's blood as New Blood and get rich. In Fangtasia, Eric is back on his throne while Pam collects money for people to drink from Sarah. She has hallucinations from Steve. Sookie is married and is expecting a child. Jason is married to Brigette and they have three children together. They get a visitor for a Thanksgiving party. Sam, Nicole and their daughter come by. In the evening Jessica and Hoyt, Arlene and Keith, Lafayette and James, Andy and Holly, Adilyn and Wade, Lattie Mae and Reverend Daniels and Willa are there to celebrate.

characters

Sookie Stackhouse

Sookie Stackhouse is Jason's 25-year-old sister and lives with her grandmother Adele at the beginning of the first season. She lost her parents in a spring tide at the age of eight. Sookie is helpful, stubborn, honest, but also vengeful. Sookie works as a waitress in Merlotte’s bar . She has mixed feelings about the fact that her boss Sam has loved her since she took the job. In the bar she meets the vampire Bill and falls in love with him. The special thing about Sookie is her ability to read minds. She also appears to be telekinetic. Only she cannot read the thoughts of vampires, which is why they have a special attraction on her. The vampires have a special interest in Sookie because of their extraordinary abilities. The residents of the city are sometimes critical of Sookie, as she often knows about things that others want to hide through her ability. In principle, Sookie doesn't try to listen to someone else's thoughts, but she doesn't always succeed. People close to Sookie know of her telepathic skills. Her best friend has been Tara since she was a child. Through her relationship with Bill, Sookie gets further and further into the company of vampires and supernatural creatures. She breaks up with him when she learns that Bill lied to her at the beginning of their relationship. She gets together with Eric in the beginning to the middle of the fourth season, but separates from him at the end of the fourth season.

William Thomas "Bill" Compton

William Thomas Compton, called Bill, is a mysterious 173-year-old vampire. Born in Louisiana in 1835, he served in the 28th Louisiana Infantry in the American Civil War . After the end of the war in 1865, when he was on his way home to his wife and two children, he was bitten by a female vampire and made one of theirs. With its creator Lorena Krasiki he was together until 1935 before he left her. In the present he has returned to his homeland, Bon Temps, and has settled in the house of his ancestors. Unlike many other vampires, Bill does not see people as inferior or "cattle", but wishes for an inconspicuous, bourgeois existence among them. Since Bill lives alone and not like many other vampires in a "nest", in contrast to these, who are often cruel and hedonistic, he sometimes looks like a normal person. When he gave Sookie his blood to save her life, he created such a connection between the two - he can find her at any time and feel when she is in danger. It later turns out that Bill did this deliberately and had Sookie injured at the behest of his then Queen Sophie-Anne. He joins Russell Edgington to protect Sookie. He would like to have a normal life with her as she is the only person he ever really loved. However, Sookie later finds out that Bill lied to her early on in their relationship and planned to give her his blood. Then she separates from him. Bill overthrows the vampire queen Sophie-Anne and becomes the new king of Louisiana.

Sam Merlotte

Sam is the owner of Merlotte’s bar and Sookie's employer. He is a proponent of the amendment to the law for vampires, but has something against Sookie becoming friends with Bill - on the one hand out of concern for her, on the other hand because he has feelings for her himself. In the first and third season he sleeps with Tara - mostly out of frustration - but there is no relationship between the two. Sam is a shapeshifter who was rejected by his adoptive parents as a teenager because of his special abilities. Since then he has had problems building trust in other people and revealing his ability to them. Even so, Sookie, Daphne, and a few other people find out about it. Often times, he turns into a dog. In the course of the series he learns to accept himself. He gets to know his real parents, but only keeps in touch with his younger brother Tommy, who then lives in Bon Temps. Due to an argument between the two of them, Sam banishes Tommy from his life for a while, until Tommy is finally killed by Marcus while trying to protect Sam.

Jason Stackhouse

Jason is the rather simple-minded older brother of Sookie. He is a womanizer and goes to bed with almost any willing woman. Unlike Sookie, he doesn't like vampires and is full of prejudices, but that doesn't prevent him from sleeping with fang bangers or experimenting with V. However, the experiments with V mostly go wrong. In the first season, he is frequently suspected of murder for sleeping with women who were murdered shortly afterwards. Later he falls in love with the V- addict Amy Burley and kidnaps a vampire with her. In the second season he is approached by the Society of the Sun , which actively fights vampires, and is happy to be one of its members. When the maenad casts Tara's friend Eggs under her spell and this sheriff threatens Bellefleur, he shoots Eggs. To protect Jason, Bellefleur testifies that he shot. Jason then blackmails the detectives to train him as a police officer. In the third season, Jason falls in love with Crystal Norris, who is not averse to a relationship, but is forced to marry her half-brother. But eventually they come together. When Jason is kidnapped and raped by her and Felton, he breaks up with her. At the end of the fourth season, he meets Jessica.

Tara Mae Thornton

Tara is a 26 year old, aggressive African American woman. She clashes with everyone, even her best friend Sookie every now and then. The two have been best friends for years, as Tara was actually raised by Sookie's grandmother. She fled to her friend's house when her mother was drunk. Tara's relationship with her mother is marked by contempt (because of her alcohol addiction and bigoted religiosity), but also by her desperate search for respect and love on the part of her mother. This makes her an extremely unstable personality. She works like Sookie in Merlotte’s . She has been in love with Jason Stackhouse since childhood, but that passes in the second season. She also despises vampires because, in her opinion, Bill Sookie is constantly hurting and she is raped and imprisoned by a vampire in season three. That's why she joins a coven of witches in the fourth season that fights against the vampires.

Lafayette Reynolds

Lafayette Reynolds is Tara's cousin. He works as a cook at Merlotte’s and with Jason, Hoyt and Rene / Drew for the city. He also deals , among other things with V , prostitutes himself and runs a website. In the second season he is captured by Eric in order to be able to punish him for trading in vampire blood. He is seriously injured and gets Eric to drink his blood. He suffers greatly from the capture and renounces vampire blood. After being freed by Sookie, he withdraws a lot for the time being. In the third season we learn that he is financing an expensive nursing home for his sick mother. He gets to know her caretaker Jesus and meets with him. While the relationship Lafayette has experience with re- V . In the fourth season he finds out that he is a medium.

Eric Northman

Eric is one of the most powerful vampires and sheriffs in this part of Louisiana. He is the "sheriff of the 5th district" in the hierarchy of vampires. He is over 1000 years old and was a Swedish Viking prince during his lifetime. His family was murdered by Russell Edgington. He was transformed by the vampire Godric after being critically wounded in battle. Today he and his descendant Pam own the vampire bar Fangtasia in Shreveport. The vampire appears unscrupulous and cold. But even if people only serve him as food or for sexual pleasure, he is not one of those vampires who kill for fun. He's very interested in Sookie and her mental abilities. In a second season bombing by the Community of the Sun, he throws himself in front of Sookie to protect her. Then he asks her to suck the bullets out of him, even though his body would have expelled them after a while anyway. Sookie becomes more sensitive to Eric's physical stimuli after the suction. After Sookie breaks up with Bill, Eric loses his memory due to a curse and begins a relationship with Sookie who takes him in. However, later, unintentionally through Sookie, he regains his memory.

Jessica Hamby

Jessica is Bill's "punishment". Since he had killed a vampire, he had to transform her in the tenth episode of the first season. She is only 17 years old when she is transformed. Life as a vampire seems incredibly attractive to her, as she can finally do all the malicious and wicked things that her bigoted parents have forbidden her, but she still misses her old life at times. She has a very tense relationship with Bill because he wants to raise her. The relationship improves over time, however, as Bill often protects them. She gets along well with Sookie. Jessica gets together with Hoyt Fortenberry, but breaks up with him because too many people are against the human-vampire relationship. At the end of the second season, she sucks a trucker and accidentally kills him. In the third season, she and Hoyt get back together. But not for long. She breaks up with him and starts a brief affair with Jason.

Pamela Swynford De Beaufort

Pamela, called "Pam", is a descendant of Eric. She was transformed by him in 1905 and considers him a big brother. In 1905 she was a prostitute working in San Francisco. Eric saved her from a murderer and they both fell in love. The brief appearance of Lorena and Bill, who killed Pam's colleagues, drove Eric off both of them. After she was transformed, they both traveled the world. After the great revelation of the vampires, they founded the bar “Fangtasia”, which Pam runs from the fifth season with her descendant “Tara” and the waitress “Ginger”.

Lorena Krasiki

Lorena was transformed by Istvàn. This forced them to bring people to him so that he can kill people in agony. Lorena gradually looked at István's people-hating manner, so that she herself had great hatred of people. In 1865 she met Bill, whom she immediately transformed. After that, they both had a bloody relationship. They traveled around and killed people. In 1935 Bill separated from her, but Lorena continued to love him. Eric calls her to Dallas so she can stop Bill from saving Sookie. The attempt succeeds and Eric saves Sookie, while Bill weakens Lorena. At Godric's mansion, Lorena makes a big scene and when she tries to kill Sookie, Godric stops her and expels her. Lorena travels to Mississippi and has Bill kidnapped to Mississippi on the orders of Russell Edginton. There it comes back to a relationship between Bill and Lorena. When Bill tries to bring Sookie back to Bon Temps, he is captured and Lorena is assigned to kill Bill. Lorena tortures Bill and they both speak out. When Lorena withdraws, Sookie shows up trying to save Bill. When Lorena tries to stop Sookie, Sookie stakes her.

Salome Agrippa

Salome is a 2000-year-old vampire who appears for the first time in the fifth season. The myth surrounding the figure of the beguiling male murdering Salome is of biblical origin. In the New Testament she is the executioner of John the Baptist . She has worked in Authority for 500 years and is the mistress of Roman, the most powerful vampire within Authority. Salome supported Nora in her career within the Authority and both see themselves as sisters. They are the founders of the sanguinists, a group of religious vampire fanatics for whom humans are nothing more than a source of food to be exploited and enslaved. At the end of season four, it is Salome who frees Russell Edgington. In the fifth season, she lures Eric and Bill into a trap. After they take Russell to the headquarters, Salome pretends to question him. Instead, she manipulates the computerized stake with which Russell is to be executed. Thus the tide turns and Russell can stake Roman in his place. With the death of their former lover, the prophecy of a new world order in the spirit of Lilith seems to be fulfilled for Salome and Nora and Nora, Russell and Salome take over power within the authority. They blow up the True Blood factories and kill any vampires who are not on their side. Salome is deeply religious and wants nothing more than that Lilith appears to her. When she actually appears to her and says that Salome is the chosen one, she wants to complete her supposed electedness by drinking the vial of Lilith's blood. However, Bill has already exchanged the blood, so that Salome is weakened by a blood mixed with silver. Then she is staked by Bill.

Vampire picture of the series

The vampire image of True Blood is largely based on the usual literary templates. This means that vampires cannot stay in sunlight, they get burned and ultimately die. They can only enter the houses of people if they are invited by them - but vampires can persuade people to do so by "districting" (this is what the vampire Franklin does when he played Tara in It Hurts Me Too , the 3rd episode of season 3 charmed). They die if a wooden stake is rammed through their hearts or if they are shot with wooden bullets. Direct contact with silver is very painful for vampires and weakens them, pieces of silver that have penetrated their bodies are expelled during the healing process.

Contrary to traditional vampire clichés, the sight of a Christian cross does not have any negative effects on them, you can see them in mirrors and photograph them as normal. Garlic has no negative effects on vampires, at most they perceive the smell as unpleasant, just like some people. Unlike in many vampire stories, people can also expel vampires from their homes, which then forces them to leave the building immediately. Vampire blood causes almost immediate wound healing in people, strengthens them, gives them supernatural powers and creates a connection between vampire and human: The vampire can perceive human sensations and locate the human being at any time, and the human being feels u. a. sexually attracted to the vampire.

The fate of the vampires in the series is based on that of the gay and lesbian movement in the USA and their terminology: In the opening credits, the camera pans past a church with the words "God hates fangs" posted on the portal . The Westboro Baptist Church is known for the slogan "God Hates Fags" (God hates fags ). There are other allusions to this church in the series, so Jason tells Sookie that he is in the "Marlboro Baptist Church".

The three-part social drama In The Flesh broadcast on the BBC in 2013 has strong parallels to True Blood . There, the oppressed and emancipating themselves are not vampires, but zombies who are trying to reintegrate into society.

terminology

Due to the fact that there are indeed vampires in the series universe True Blood , a fictional jargon developed within it that does not exist in the real world.

There are also shape shifters and werewolves as well as other mythological beings.

Fangbanger

Fangbanger ( loosely translated as fang bumpers ) is the name of vampire groupies who have sex with vampires and / or are bitten by them. The term was used by other authors such as B. Rachel Caine taken over.

Tru Blood

Tru Blood is blood synthesized by Japanese scientists and sold to vampires as a substitute for human blood. It is available in different flavors, which correspond to the blood groups and Rhesus factors , and is usually served warm (around the human body temperature).

V or V juice

V is the blood of vampires, which has become an illegal fashion drug since they went public, as people after oral or nasal consumption perceive the world differently, feel stronger and healthier, perceive philia more intensely and have better sex .

Districts

Vampires have the ability to hypnotize people. This process is referred to in the series as charming . Hypnosis is done through eye contact and must first be learned by young vampires. As a result, the person is completely under the spell of the vampire. The pinning can be used, among other things, to persuade potential victims to have their blood sucked out or to delete or change people's memories.

Episode list

Reviews

“'True Blood' is aimed at an adult target group, not teenagers, and pulls a rough trail of guts and blood behind it, which is wonderfully underlined by the ubiquitous black humor. In any case, 'True Blood' offers a pleasantly bloody contrast to other series on the market and the authors come up with a lot to really heat up series fans. For series lovers and vampire fans, 'True Blood' is therefore an absolute must. "

- Vivian Guerrero-Meneses : VIRUS

“Sweaty and at the same time of semiotic coolness, wet and happy and yet calculated with razor sharpness: This is how this series tells once again about the vampire as a projection figure for a managed world regulated by practical constraints. Seldom have you seen Dracula's heirs so depraved, rarely have you had so much fun doing it. Whether as an emblematic figure for aspiring civil rights movements or as a cipher for the subject beyond social censorship: The 'True Blood' vampires are paler than their predecessors - and all the more shimmering. "

- FAZ

"In addition to the romantic love story and the classic Gothic horror, enriched with a lot of sex, blood and crisp dialogues," True Blood "is also a multi-layered moral painting, an abysmal social drama peppered with pop culture references and current references ..."
