Alexander Johan Hjalmar Skarsgård [ ˈskɑːʂɡoːɖ ] (born August 25, 1976 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish actor , director and former model.

Life

Skarsgård was born in Stockholm as the child of the Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård and his then wife My, a doctor. He has six younger brothers, Gustaf (* 1980), Sam (* 1982), Bill (* 1990), Valter (* 1995) and the half-brothers Ossian (* 2009) and Kolbjörn (* 2012), as well as a younger sister named Eija (* 1992).

Alexander Skarsgård supports the Stockholm-based football club Hammarby IF and is interested in ice hockey. He was voted the Sexiest Man in Sweden five times and in 2009 was one of the 100 sexiest men alive by People Magazine .

Skarsgård studied political science, completed his military service in the navy and enrolled in Stockholm to study architecture. Aside from Swedish and English, he also speaks a little French and German. He currently lives in Los Angeles . He dated actress Kate Bosworth from 2009 to 2011 . At the end of July 2011, both announced their separation.

Skarsgård made his film debut in 1983 as Kalle Nubb in Allan Edwall's award-winning drama Ake and His World . At the age of 13, his role as Jojjo in Rumle Hammerich's family drama Dogs Som Log made him known all over Sweden. Since it irritated him to be stared at by people and to read articles about himself, he interrupted his career for about 8 years and turned down every offer during this time. After serving in the military, Skarsgård enrolled at Marymount Theater School in New York City in 1997 to learn acting. After two years in New York, he returned to Sweden to shoot his first “adult role ” in Christina Olofson's Happy Ending . Since then he has made more than fifteen films in Scandinavia and is now one of Sweden's most popular stage and screen actors. In 2003 he wrote the screenplay for the short film Att döda ett barn , which he also directed with Björne Larson . Both Skarsgård's father and younger brother Valter appeared in it.

Interest in Alexander Skarsgård outside Scandinavia has grown rapidly in recent years and he has signed contracts with the Endeavor agency in Los Angeles, New York and with Markham & Froggatt, the UK's most prestigious agency representing him in Europe. He has appeared in films and miniseries such as Zoolander , The Last Mission and Revelations . Through his role as Sgt. Brad Colbert in the HBO miniseries Generation Kill , he became well known in the United States in 2008 . He became known to European audiences through the series True Blood , in which he plays the vampire Eric Northman . The series, which is based on the book series about Sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris , focuses on the love triangle between the vampires Bill ( Stephen Moyer ) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and the waitress Sookie ( Anna Paquin ), who is telepathic . In 2009 Alexander Skarsgård was seen in the video Paparazzi by the pop singer Lady Gaga . In 2010 he starred alongside Jason Statham in 13 , a film by Georgian director Géla Babluani . In 2011 he was seen in Lars von Trier's film Melancholia . In April 2012 he got the lead role in the horror thriller Hidden , which is directed by twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer. And in the summer of 2012 he became the advertising face of the men's fragrance Encounter by Calvin Klein .

In 2016, Skarsgård starred as the title hero in the American adventure film Legend of Tarzan by David Yates . A year later, he received an Emmy for his role as the violent husband of Nicole Kidman in the TV miniseries Big Little Lies , and a Golden Globe in 2018 for Best Supporting Actor - Series, Miniseries or TV Movie .
