The books

Temporarily dead

For four years, vampires have been able to legally move around Louisiana and several other states. Vampires are no longer forced to chase people and suck their blood, as a synthetic blood called True Blood has been invented that allows vampires to survive.

One day the first vampire, Bill Compton, appears in Bon Temps. Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress who sees her telepathic skills as a disability , meets the vampire Bill in the bar she works at. Through her ability, she learns that Bill is in danger because two locals try to drain him. Since the blood of vampires acts as a sexual enhancer and as a remedy, there is an illegal market for this drug. Sookie saves Bill from this life-threatening situation, finds out that she cannot read his mind, and enjoys the newly experienced silence in his company.

While Sookie and Bill fall in love, a mysterious series of murders takes place in Bon Temps. Since two of the murdered women were so-called "fangbangers" (who let themselves be bitten by vampires for lust), many assume that they were murdered by vampires. Police, however, suspect Jason Stackhouse, Sookie's brother, for having had a brief relationship with two of the victims. Sookie wants to help her brother with her ability and drives Bill to the Fangtasia bar in Shreveport. This bar is owned by the vampire Eric, a very old vampire who takes a liking to Sookie and her ability. Since Eric is above Bill in the vampire hierarchy , Bill leaves to improve his position in the hierarchy so that Eric cannot make any claims on Sookie.

For the reason that Sookie's grandmother was one of the murder victims and Sookie lived in a house with her, Bill assumes that Sookie was the intentional victim. That's why he lets the vampire Bubba stand guard in front of their house in his absence. The murderer, Rene Lenier, a friend of her brother Jason, who hates vampires profoundly, manages to temporarily turn off Sookie's protector. Sookie is able to flee from Rene for a short time, but he catches up with her and a fight ensues. Sookie emerges victorious from this fight, but is seriously injured. When she wakes up in the hospital , Bill is watching over her by the side of her bed.

Undead in Dallas

The Merlottes cook, Lafayette, is found dead. There is no evidence of who the killer was. Shortly afterwards, Sookie is attacked by the maenad Callisto, who is in the woods of Bon Temps. This poisons her and threatens to die. Bill takes her to Eric at the Fangtasia bar. There a healer is consulted who tells them that Sookie's only salvation is to exchange all of her blood. After the vampires suck her blood, she gets blood transfusions and is thus saved. Sookie was a message for Eric to pay tribute to the maenad .

After this incident, Sookie is loaned to the vampires in Dallas to find a missing vampire named Farrell through her gift. At the airport, Sookie narrowly escapes being kidnapped, but Bill rushes to her aid at the last second. After using Sookie's gift, it becomes clear that Farrell was kidnapped by a young vampire named Godfrey (or Godric) on behalf of the Brotherhood of the Sun, which wants to destroy all vampires. Godfrey is said to go towards the sun during a ceremony (that is, they expose themselves to sunlight and thus commit suicide). Godfrey is supposed to carry Farrell with him to death. With this ceremony the brotherhood wants to show the power of God.

Sookie goes undercover to the Brotherhood with Hugo Ayres, the lover of a Dallas vampire , to find out where Farrell is being held. Sookie quickly realizes that they are in danger, but they can no longer escape. They are overwhelmed and held in a dungeon . Only then does Sookie notice that Hugo is a traitor and that he had provided the Brotherhood of the Sun with information. Then Hugo is put in Farrell's dungeon and Sookie gets a visit from the violent guard Gabe. When he tries to rape her, the vampire Godfrey comes to her aid and kills Gabe.

After Sookie, who, as she learns from Godfrey, should also be sacrificed during the ceremony, persuades Godfrey, he helps her to escape. The escape would almost have failed if a shapeshifter named Luna hadn't turned up. The two women flee together in a car, but are followed by the brotherhood and they are involved in a car accident . They are hospitalized and Sookie is safely dropped off at her hotel with the help of Luna's friends. Meanwhile, the vampires free Farrell. As planned, Godfrey went towards the sun, but without ceremony and without other sacrifices .

To celebrate Farrell's rescue , the Dallas vampires have a party to which Sookie and Bill are also invited. While the party is in full swing, the Brotherhood begins firing pistols at the guests and many, including some people, are injured or killed. Luckily, Sookie is saved by Eric.

Back at home in Bon Temps, Sookie learns that secret meetings are taking place that end in wild orgies . These meetings could be linked to Lafayette's death, which has still not been resolved. Because of this, Sookie, with Eric, since Bill is in Dallas, decides to go to one of these meetings and search the minds of the people there for clues. She learns that at least two of the guests were involved in the murder. Meanwhile, the maenad appears and kills almost all of the guests and then decides to leave Bon Temps. Evidence that the group had murdered Lafayette was found in one of the perpetrators' cars . This evidence ultimately led to the resolution of this case in the eyes of the police.

Club Dead

Bill receives a secret assignment from the Queen of Louisiana. He should create a directory in which all vampires are listed, including pictures, information and special skills. While he is doing this job, Bill is kidnapped because this project is extremely valuable to a vampire. Although Bill betrayed her shortly before the kidnapping, Sookie is sent to Jackson , Mississippi , accompanied by the werewolf Alcide Herveaux , to use her ability to find out information about the place where Bill is caught.

At Club Dead, Sookie finds out that Bill is still alive. However, he is under constant torture because the vampires who kidnapped him want information about his project. However, Bill does not reveal any information. A day later, Sookie visits Club Dead again. There they hear the thoughts of a man who intends to a vampire stake . Although she runs the risk of revealing her ability, she throws herself between the vampire and his attacker. He rams the stake in her waist and Sookie goes down seriously injured.

Sookie, accompanied by Eric, is brought to the mansion of the most senior vampire in Mississippi. Together they learn that Bill is being held prisoner on the property and they come up with a plan for how Sookie can save Bill. Healed and fortified by Eric's blood, Sookie sets out during the day to find Bill. Sookie finds Bill tied up in silver chains. His weak body is covered with cuts and burns. While Sookie frees Bill from the chains, the vampire with whom Bill cheated and who is responsible for his torture appears unexpectedly. It is its creator Lorena. In a fight, Sookie can surprisingly stake Lorena and remains unharmed herself. Wrapped in blankets, Sookie is able to move Bill, who can barely stand on his feet, into a car provided.

Sookie, who is of course aware that Bill has cheated on her, asks Eric to bring her back to Bon Temps after the successful rescue operation. When they stop at a gas station in between , they are attacked by werewolves who work with the vampires from Mississippi. The two manage to overpower the werewolves and then they go home. Once at home, Sookie is expected by more werewolves and beaten up. Bill and Eric rush to the rescue and kill all the werewolves. After this event, Sookie no longer wants to have anything to do with the supernatural world and revokes Bill and Eric's house invitations.

The vampire who loved me

Sookie and Bill are separated after the events at Club Dead, and Bill reveals to her that he is planning to go to Peru . After New Years Eve at Sam's Bar, Sookie resolves not to be beaten up anymore. As she drives home, she sees Eric running down the street half-naked and takes him home with her. It turns out he's lost his memory. Pam and Chow come to Sookie and tell of a robbery that witches carried out on the Fangtasia bar to extort protection money from the vampires. Now the witches look for Eric with leaflets and offer a large reward. Since no one except Jason, Sookie's brother, knows of Eric's whereabouts, Eric should stay with Sookie for the time being. Jason goes missing shortly afterwards and Sookie goes to find him.

Meanwhile, Sookie and Eric develop a sexual relationship. Eric even offers to leave his bar in Shreveport and stay with her to work if she wants. However, Sookie, although attracted to the "new" Eric, cannot bring himself to leave him without memories of himself and his past.

Sookie informs the werewolf Alcide Herveaux about the happenings in Shreveport and the vampires, some witches and the werewolves band together to kill the coven under the command of Hallow. During the planning, Bill arrives and recognizes Debbie Pelt among those present as one of the people who participated in his torture . After Alcide hears this, he renounces Debbie: she is dead to him and he allows his werewolf pack to kill her anytime she changes her shape. After this incident, Debbie leaves the room and the attack on the witches begins. The Circle is defeated and Sookie and Eric return to Bon Temps, where Debbie Pelt is waiting for them. Eric intercepts the first bullet for Sookie, then she shoots Debbie in self-defense. Eric buries the body and hides her car. The next day, however, Eric is freed from his curse and now has no memory of the time with Sookie.

Jason is finally found in Hot Shot by Sookie. A Werpanther named Felton Norris held him there out of jealousy towards Crystal, Jason's friend and also Werpanther, and bit him to reduce Jason's attractiveness to Crystal.

Vampires preferred

In Louisiana are shapeshifters shot. Jason, the brother of Sookie, is suspected of the attacks to have committed. Because he has been transformed from a Werpanther in Hot Shot into a half-Werpanther and it is assumed that he is not happy with it and wants to take revenge . On the next full moon, the hot-shot Werpanthers want to take revenge themselves. When Sam Merlotte, the owner of the bar where Sookie works as a waitress, is shot, a new bartender is needed: Eric Northman generously borrows a vampire named Charles Twining. He is billeted with Sookie to protect Sookie during the shootings. And a fire is actually set in Sookie's house, from which the elf Claudine can just save Sookie. Charles killed a strange man who smelled of gasoline outside the house . He has a Brotherhood of the Sun card in his pocket.

Since Alcide Herveaux's pack is looking for a new pack leader, he makes Sookie promise to be part of the fight later and read the minds of both opponents.

Later, when Sookie is trying to return books to the library, she is shot. The peculiarity of the shots is that the bullets of all victims fit, except for the one bullet that was fired at Sam. Sookie and Sam go in search of the shooter and meet the armed Sweety Des Arts, Sam's cook. She admits she killed the shapeshifters in revenge for being turned into a half-werewolf. Sookie would have smelled like shapeshifters, so Sweety shot her too. Sweety was shot dead by Detective Bellefleur. Sookie returns to the bar, happy that the shots have cleared. There she meets Bubba, who tells her Eric's message that someone is not what he appears to be. Shortly afterwards, Charles Twining attacks them. It turns out that he was sent by Longshadow's creator (the vampire Eric killed) to inflict pain on Eric. It was he who shot Sam to get hired as a bartender. It was he who set Sookie's house on fire . However, Charles does not survive the attack on Sookie.

During the events, Tara Thornton forcibly tied up with the vampire Mickey, a cruel man. In order to free her from his company, Sookie asks Eric for help. In return, he wants to know everything about the time he lived with Sookie. She tells him all about their sexual relationship and the murder of Debbie Pelt. In return, Eric fulfills Sookie's request, which after a few complications goes ahead. Mickey beats up Tara, knocks Eric out, and tries to kill Sookie. Then he escapes.

In the battle to lead the pack, Sookie discovers that Alcide's opponent is cheating on his father. But he manages to overpower Alcide's father in the last fight and thus gain control of the pack. Then he kills Alcide's father.

Ball of the Vampires

Sookie Stackhouse goes to New Orleans to resolve the house of her late cousin Hadley, vampire and former lover of the vampire queen Sophie-Anne Leclerq . In Hadley's apartment she meets the witch Amelia Broadway, who had put an immutability charm on the house until Sookie arrived. When she picks it up, both of them are attacked by a young vampire who wakes up. When the police arrive and rescue them, they are taken to the hospital . There Sookie is visited by Bill and Eric. On Eric's orders, Bill confesses to her that he was sent to Bon Temps by Sophie-Anne Leclerq to bring Sookie to her and then use her telepathic skills, which Hadley had told her, for himself. Disappointed and hit, Sookie sends Bill away.

Sookie is later called by Sophie-Anne, who tells her that Hadley stole a bracelet from her, a bride present from Peter Threadgill, Sophie-Anne's groom. A few days later, the queen will give a ball where she will have to wear the bracelets. The loss of this gift would be an open affront to Peter Threadgill, the consequence of which would be the dissolution of the marriage and the takeover of the kingdom. Let Sookie find the bracelets.

To clarify the circumstances of the attack of a newly created vampire on Sookie and Amelia, Amelia calls together several witches and wizards to perform an ectoplasmic reconstruction . During the spell, they see that he is the werewolf Jake Purifoy. He is attacked and left fatally injured, Hadley finds him, and in order to save him she begins to turn him into a vampire. When the worthy Quinn, with whom Sookie is currently dating, visits Sookie, they are kidnapped by werewolves. The Pelt family hired her to avenge the death of Debbie Pelt. Quinn and Sookie manage to overwhelm them, and eventually Sookie tells them the story of the self-defense murder of Debbie. They agree that the family will leave Sookie alone, who in return will not tell the police about their kidnapping.

At the Queen's Ball , Sookie discreetly presents Sophie-Anne with the previously well-hidden bracelets, which, however, do not prevent Peter Threadgill from starting a war anyway. During the fight, Andre kills the King to protect Sophie-Anne, with Sookie and the Queen as the only witnesses.

When Sookie returns to Bon Temps, Amelia Broadway accompanies her. The witch has accidentally and forbidden turned her friend into a cat and moves in with Sookie to hide from the witches in New Orleans.

Vampires are sound asleep

A vampire summit takes place in a luxury hotel for vampires near Chicago . The Queen of Louisiana, Sophie-Anne Leclerq, was charged by the Arkansas vampires for killing their King, Peter Threadgill. Since Hurricane Kathrina wreaked havoc in the queen's realm, she is in a precarious position. To consolidate her position of power and prove her innocence, she has hired Sookie to help her with her gift of telepathy. She is said to read the minds of people in the wake of other vampires, an invaluable asset to Sophie-Anne amid numerous political power struggles. Unmarried, she is vulnerable and faces intrigues as well as alliance attempts.

Shortly after Sookie's arrival, nearly all of the Arkansas vampires are murdered (on behalf of the Queen), making the process easier for Sophie-Anne. Sookie meets Barry Horowitz, who is just as mind-reading as she is and who reports to another vampire.

The telepath proves to be extremely valuable to the Queen when, on the one hand, she makes the suggestion that Sophie-Anne should make Andre, the vampire she created and devoted to her, her new king. On the other hand, Sookie discovers a bomb in front of the queen's apartments, which can be defused by the bomb squad. Sookie also saves Sophie-Anne at the trial of the Queen of Louisiana: She notices that the accusers have been manipulated. One of the accusers is murdered shortly afterwards. The queen is acquitted. But Sookie's deeds are her undoing when Andre decides to bind her to himself and thus to Sophie-Anne forever with a blood bond. He is about to force her to exchange blood with him to create the tape when Eric shows up. He offers himself up for the blood band, arguing that he has already swapped blood with Sookie and is therefore better suited for the band. Andre agrees and Sookie has no choice but to let it happen as the lesser evil.

Sookie and Barry find out that the Brotherhood of the Sun bombs have been placed all over the hotel and that they will explode during the day to kill the sleeping vampires. They manage to save some people and vampires, including the Queen (who is losing her legs), Eric and Pam, when the explosions destroy the hotel. Sookie and Barry team up to find trapped people using their telepathy. When Sookie joins Quinn, Andre is passed out, but with minor injuries. To get Sookie out of Andre's control, Quinn stakes him. Sookie doesn't step in.

A vampire just in case

When Sookie returns to normal, her previously unknown great-grandfather Niall Brigant shows up . He tells her that he is an elf and that he wants to meet Sookie. The only downer for Sookie in the joy of the new family member is that her boyfriend Quinn doesn't get in touch with her.

When some female werewolves are killed in Shreveport and she is almost killed too, she contacts Alcide Herveaux. In the Shreveport pack , two groups hold each other responsible for having committed the murders, but Sookie prevents an escalation by using her telepathy to testify to the innocence of the werewolves present. It turns out that a pack from an area devastated by Hurricane Katrina committed the murders in order to incite the pack in Shreveport and then take over their territory . A fight breaks out, the Shreveport pack wins and Alcide declares himself the new pack leader.

Quinn owes Felipe de Castro, the vampire king of Nevada , a favor for the Nevada vampires covering up the murders that Quinn's mother, the mentally ill valued woman, committed during the events in Chicago (see Vampires asleep ). With Quinn's information about Louisiana's vampires, Felipe de Castro takes over the kingdom of Louisiana with his vampires, kills Sophie-Anne Leclerq and all the sheriffs except Eric Northman, who surrenders to the king, who in return spares the vampires under Eric's command. When Sookie learns of Quinn's story, she ends her relationship with him, as his mother will never do without his help.

At the marriage of Sookie's brother Jason and Crystal, Werpanther from Hot Shot, ( sound asleep in Vampires ), Sookie had to vouch for her brother should he commit adultery. Crystal was her uncle Calvin Norris. But Crystal cheats, and Jason arranges for Calvin and Sookie to witness Crystal's adultery. They have to redeem their guarantee and Sookie breaks Calvin's fingers, according to Werpanthan tradition. As a result, she banishes Jason and Crystal from her life.

After this incident, Sookie is so shaken that Sam calls Eric to the bar and tells Sookie everything. Felipe de Castro arrives in the parking lot and wants to speak to Eric. Sookie drives off, but has an uneasy feeling on the way home and when she drives back she sees that Sigebert, former bodyguard of Sophie-Anne Leclerq, has tied up Eric, Sam and Felipe de Castro. She saves the three by running over Sigebert with her car. Felipe de Castro now owes her a favor.

At the end of the book, Sookie Hadley's (Sookie's late cousin) meets former husband Remy Savor and their child Hunter. She finds out that Hunter can read minds.

Vampire whisper

The time has come - after the vampires have been accepted by the majority of humans, the werewolves are now also going public. When Sam turns into a collie in his bar , the waitress Arlene Fowler, who is now a member of the vampire-hating sect Brotherhood of the Sun, quits. Sam's mother is shot by her husband while changing shape. Sam drives over to her while Sookie takes care of the bar.

In order to protect Sookie from Felipe de Castro, the vampire king of Louisiana and Nevada, and his deputy Victor Madden, Eric wants to bind her to him: He asks Sookie to give him a package containing a ritual dagger. She does it without knowing that she married Eric the vampire way. Victor Madden, witness of the ritual, and Sookie himself are not pleased.

She is visited by two FBI agents who want to find out how she was able to find the missing persons after the hotel explosion (see Vampires sound asleep ). Immediately after their visit, the crucified body of Crystal, Werpanther, pregnant and the wife of Sookie's brother Jason is found in the parking lot of Sam's Bar. Also, Sookie is warned by Niall that a war is raging among the elves, which could affect them too. An enemy elf tries to kill her on her farm, but Sookie kills him. After a brief argument between Bill and Quinn, in which Sookie is wounded, Eric arrives and takes care of her. You and Eric start a relationship.

Sookie also discovers that, while Arlene Fowler and her friends from the Brotherhood of the Sun are not responsible for Crystal's murder, they plan to crucify Sookie in a copycat act. When Sookie calls the police, there is a shooting. After finding an elf in the woods, Sookie decides to hire bodyguards: the werewolves from Alcide Herveaux and the vampires from Shreveport send Tray Dawson and Bubba.

But two enemy elves manage to kidnap Sookie: Lochlan and Neave, a couple famous among elves for their cruelty. In their hatred of people with elven blood, they not only killed Sookie's parents many years ago, but also crucified Crystal. Well, in order to force Niall to surrender in the Elven War, they brutally torture Sookie until she is finally saved by Bill and Niall. Eric gives her blood to save her life, but stops so as not to turn her into a vampire. Breandean, leader of Niall's enemies, and his companions are defeated in a final battle. Trey, Clancy and Claudine (she was pregnant) die, Bill was poisoned with silver.

Niall finally decides to separate the elven world from the human world in order to protect humanity from the elves. The portals will be closed.

Supernatural beings

Vampires

The vampires in the Sookie Stackhouse book series feed on human blood, as in most vampire tales. They can also drink True Blood, a synthetic blood made in Japan. The blood of a vampire can have a healing effect on a person, increases attractiveness and is a sexual enhancer . Another characteristic of a vampire is his superhuman strength. The older a vampire is, the stronger he becomes. Vampires can charm people and thus hypnotize them in some way . Vampires can show feelings and, for example, cry. The difference with them is that their tears are made of blood. Some vampires have special abilities: some can fly, others telepathically communicate with vampires they have created, and others. However, they also have weak points: they have to sleep during the day because sunlight would kill them and they do n't like the smell of garlic . But silver is worse : It burns into the skin and weakens a vampire immensely. In order to enter a person's house, a vampire must first ask for permission or force it by being charmed. However, this invitation can be withdrawn at any time. The greatest threat to vampires comes from the growing Brotherhood of the Sun, a vampire-hating and extremely violent sect.

If a vampire and a human drink blood from each other several times, a blood bond is formed between them. You can then sense the whereabouts and the feelings and moods of the other. In addition, they are physically attracted to each other and feel comfortable in each other's presence. Through the blood bond, the human being is also linked to the maker of the vampire, since the blood of the maker is also the blood of his "child".

Shapeshifter

A shapeshifter can transform into any animal. However, he must have seen the animal beforehand. They are indistinguishable from humans and only made their true nature known all over the world much later than the vampires, together with the werewolves. Most shapeshifters have an animal they prefer to transform into. Usually they can choose when to transform themselves, but when the moon is full they are forced to transform. Unlike werewolves, shapeshifters are not organized. Both races, however, have in common the increased body temperature and the particularly fast self-healing powers.

Werewolves

Werewolves are shape shifters who can only transform themselves into wolves. They describe themselves as the shapeshifter elite. A werewolf can only arise if both parents are also werewolves. If a person is bitten by a werewolf, he turns into a wolf person. Werewolves are organized in packs, with a pack leader and their own culture. "Friends of the pack", for example, are protected when they are in werewolves' territory. In addition, werewolves can “renounce” other shapeshifters in a kind of rite. The person is treated as dead by the werewolf and may, should he transform before the wolf, be killed by anyone in the pack. If a werewolf has committed a murder, a shaman is called in to find the culprit.

Telepaths

Mind readers are very rare. You can shield the constant flow of thoughts from those around you through training, but it does require some focus. In addition to reading the mind, telepaths also perceive consciousness itself, with vampires they are like black holes. Which thoughts belong to which person, as well as the perception of the richness of detail of the thoughts, differs from telepath to telepath. Touching makes mind reading easier, as well as relaxing the person reading. No clear thoughts can be received from shapeshifters and werewolves, but feelings, motivations or images, for example. Demons send a kind of buzz, which varies in height from person to person. Vampires can only perceive a thought or motivation every now and then. Strong witches can notice the reading of their minds and even shield themselves.

Maenads

Maenads are women who have been driven insane by the god Dionysus . Dionysus penetrated some women completely and thus reached a state in them that comes very close to immortality. Dionysus was the god of grapes and therefore the maenads are very attracted to bars and the potential for violence that develops in connection with alcohol. Maenads are wild beings who live in forests and migrate from place to place to take tribute. Maenads don't just kill their victims, they poison them and then wait for them to die.

Elves

Elves describe themselves as the primordial beings of magic, from which all other forms of magical beings such as shapeshifters, demons or vampires arise. They have pointy ears and are extremely allergic to lemons and iron. They are an ancient breed and can be very cruel and terrifying. Some are more drawn to the water, others to the sky. Elves can get very old, but over time, through sexual intercourse with humans and exposure to iron in the human world, they have had fewer and fewer offspring, so their population has declined. Usually elves are in a different, magical world. There they consist of a kind of light, their true form. It is possible for elves to help other elves or people with some elven blood as a kind of guardian angel and to appear in emergency situations. So over time they can become angels. For vampires, the smell of elves is so indescribably delicious that it is very helpful for them to cover up their smell. However, only a few elves manage to do this.

Witches

Witches live in circles and practice magical rituals and can cast curses or protective spells, for example. A popular spell, for example, is the "walk-away" spell, which makes it very difficult for people to approach a place. In order to rise in the ranks of witches and perform more difficult magic, such as transformations, the witches or sorcerers must pass exams. Strong witches can make past events visible through an ectoplasmic reconstruction. With this spell, living beings can be seen in the air as if with ink, but noises are imperceptible. Since this process is very difficult, it is used only rarely and only for very important events. Some witches are followers of the Wicca religion and the rites that go with it, but not all.

Characters

Sookie Stackhouse

Sookie is 25 years old, has blonde hair and blue eyes. She's a pretty waitress in a bar in Bon Temps. Her parents died when she was seven years old. Since then she has lived with her grandmother, with whom she has a very close relationship, and her cat Tina, until they are killed in the first volume "Temporarily dead". Sookie has telepathic abilities and can therefore read people's minds. Her powers have been with her all her life and so it happened that as a child she was even sent to a psychologist because her parents suspected that she suffered from a mental illness. She can rarely read the minds of supernatural beings such as vampires, which is a huge relief for her. It takes great concentration to build up a protective shield against the thoughts of others. Often times she can read thoughts clearly, sometimes she only receives feelings or images. Eye contact or a touch makes it easier for Sookie to read other people's minds. When she meets another telepath in Dallas, she notices that she can communicate with him over a long distance. Because of her disability, as she calls her ability, she has not yet been able to enter into a relationship with a man. Also, most people think they are crazy because of their ability, which is why they largely try to hide them.

Bill Compton

William Thomas Compton, commonly known as Bill or Vampire Bill for short, lived during the Civil War . He was born on April 9, 1840 and died around November 25, 1868. He was married and had five children. Bill is a six foot tall, handsome and muscular man with thick black hair and dark brown eyes. His old-fashioned sideburns are reminiscent of the time he grew up. Bill was transformed into her own kind by the vampire Lorena and then had a romantic relationship with her for years. He has the ability to float, which not every vampire has. Although he doesn't necessarily seek the company of people, he falls head over heels in love with the pretty Sookie.

Sam Merlotte

Sam is a handsome man with red and gold hair, blue eyes and is three years older than Sookie. He's been the owner of the bar in Bon Temps called Merlottes for five years. He is good friends with Sookie but, beyond friendship, has unrequited feelings for her. Sam is a shapeshifter. He prefers to transform into a dog, more precisely a collie, and protects Sookie in this form a few times before she discovers that he is also a supernatural being. Sookie calls Sam Dean in his dog form.

Eric Northman

Eric is an extremely old vampire. He lived in the time of the Vikings and is a very tall and handsome man with blond hair. Eric, to Bill's displeasure, takes a liking to Sookie and uses her gift from time to time. Since Bill is below Eric in the hierarchy, he cannot object to such favors being requested. He is the owner of the vampire bar Fangtasia, which is frequented by vampires, tourists and fang bangers. Vampires divide America into kingdoms, which in turn are divided into districts that are administered by sheriffs. Eric is the 5th District Sheriff of Louisiana.

Jason Stackhouse

Jason is Sookie's brother. He is an attractive young man and much sought-after by women. He is not looking for a steady relationship and is more into short romances. He works in road construction. After being bitten by a Werpanther, he becomes half a Werpanther himself. He later marries Crystal Norris, a thoroughbred Werpanther.

Arlene Fowler

Arlene is a red-haired mother of two. She has been married four times and is with Rene until his arrest. For a while, Arlene and Sookie are not only work colleagues at Merlottes, but also good friends. But after Arlene joins the Brotherhood of the Sun, she turns away from both.

Rene Lenier

Rene is a short, slim man and works in road construction together with Jason Stackhouse. They are also very good friends. Rene is in a relationship with Arlene until he is jailed for the murders of two young women and Sookie's grandmother. This series of murders began with his own sister, who brought to light his hatred of vampires because she voluntarily let herself be bitten by vampires.

Claudine Crane

Claudine is Sookie's elf godmother. She is beautiful, exudes charm and happiness, and has an equally handsome brother named Claude. Claudine and Sookie are cousins.

Temporarily dead

"Rural America finally has a vampire story to call its own ... Charlaine Harris delivers both horror and humor as seen from the unique perspective of rural America. You've got to love a book where a vampire addresses a Civil War society called the Descendants of the Glorious Dead. " - Tanya Huff , bestselling author of Blood Price

“This book's intelligent mixture of painful, pleasurable, serious, skeptical and unexpected moments in a relationship where neither hero nor heroine can merge with the local norm, recalls the best kinds of magical realism. And it's one of the best vampire novels I've read in quite a while. " - Locus ( Faren Miller )

"In its range and depth, DEAD UNTIL DARK amply demonstrates the scope of modern vampire fiction ... Harris creates a small Louisiana town peopled by quirky, vivid characters reader will want to revisit again and again." - Crescent Blues

Undead in Dallas

" One terrific read. Harris has created a charming and winning character in Sookie Stackhouse… Wonderful characters, an inventive plot, and terrific situations. She has a real feel for the world she has created and allows the willing suspension of disbelief to do its job. Reminiscent of Laurell Hamilton and her Anita Blake series, it also reminds a reader of Tanya Huff's work and has the same light touch. There is a joy and an innocence about the work that make it very appealing. ” - Kliatt

"Light-hearted and appealing, LIVING DEAD IN DALLAS is a real charmer. The mystery is puzzling, and it's easy to see why Sookie is so taken with undead Bill! ” - Romantic Times

"Delightful. Harris playfully mixes several genres to make a new one that is her own bright creation. " - Denver Post

Club Dead

"Harris knows how to keep her plots bubbling along nicely, but also brings plenty of color to her evocation of the Deep South, and keeps the supernatural side of the story on a believable level. The sexy, enjoyable relationships never overwhelm the story, and the whole mixture is helped by a main character who's humane, flawed, and genuine fun to be around. Harris has also learned the most important trick of this style of mystery series. If you're in the mood for some genuinely entertaining page-turners, with a dash of blood-red horror ... give Sookie Stackhouse a try. She's slowly gathering a cult following, so be prepared to hear more of her ... " - SFX (UK)

"A third in the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris is as deliciously wonderful as the previous two. You don't want to miss this winning series starting with DEAD UNTIL DARK. " - Mystery Scene

"Charlaine Harris blends elements from the horror, mystery and romance genres to create a novel that is refreshingly unique. CLUB DEAD is a real live treat. “ - Harriet Klausner
