Apartment (short: Apt.) Is a foreign word from French and corresponds to the German word for apartment . Apartment is the corresponding loan word from English with the same meaning. In German, both words are used synonymously and usually denote a modern small apartment.
There are also serviced apartments - these are often operated by hotel chains and offer optional services.
In the German-speaking world, the term apartment is used especially in Switzerland and can have two different meanings there: On the one hand, it means a suite of rooms , for example in a hotel, and on the other hand, it means an apartment, usually with upscale furnishings.

In the context of architectural history , an apartment is understood to be a functionally related sequence of rooms in palace buildings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods . It can be guest rooms, lounges or stately living and working rooms. In the case of the latter, the sequence of rooms usually begins with an anteroom followed by an audience room , followed by a study for the prince and, in turn, the private apartments. The staggering of the rooms one behind the other made it possible to emphasize the respective social rank, depending on how far a visitor was allowed into the individual rooms. Since the baroque era, the principle of the enfilade (linear room arrangement) has been used as an architectural means of structuring ; in addition, the individual rooms were often accessible from the side via corridors and side rooms. If the rooms were in a simple line, they are referred to as `` appartements simples '' ; if two rows of rooms are parallel, they are also known as `` appartements doubles ''. In the second case, the rooms are usually separated into an official and a private area.
