Anna Helene Paquin (born July 24, 1982 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian - New Zealand actress . In 1994, at the age of eleven, she received the Oscar for best supporting actress in the film drama The Piano , making her the second youngest Oscar winner in history. But she gained fame mainly through the X-Men films and the series True Blood . Paquin has already been nominated five times for the Golden Globe .

life and career

Paquin was born in Winnipeg, Canada. Her mother is an English teacher, her father a sports teacher. She has an older brother named Andrew (* 1977) and an older sister named Katya (* 1980). She spent most of her childhood in New Zealand ; after her parents divorced in 1995, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother. As a child she played the viola , cello and piano and took ballet lessons. After graduating from school in 2000, she studied at Columbia University for a year , but then decided to pursue an acting career.

Career start and Oscar win

Her acting career began in New Zealand in 1991 when director Jane Campion was looking for a young lead actress for the drama Das Piano . Paquin's sister Katya went to a casting after an advertisement in a newspaper . Anna Paquin originally only went with the company, but was then hired for the role. She prevailed against 5000 applicants. The film was an international hit, and Paquin received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role . She is the second youngest ever award-winning actress after Tatum O'Neal . Then she initially had no plans to become an actress and turned down new role offers. It wasn't until 1996 that she appeared again as the young Jane Eyre in the film of the same name. In the same year she played the lead role in the drama Amy and the Wild Geese . In her teenage years, she was also in the comedies Hurlyburly and Eine wie keine to see, as well as in the drama Almost Famous - Almost Famous on the side of Kate Hudson .

Breakthrough with X-Men and True Blood

She achieved renewed worldwide fame in 2000 through her role in the comic book adaptation X-Men , in which she played the mutant Rogue. For this role she received the Golden Globe for Best Series Lead Actress in 2009 and was also nominated in this category in 2010. She had another success on television in 2009 with the title role of the film The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler , which also earned her a nomination for the Golden Globe. In 2010 she starred alongside Katie Holmes in the comedy The Romantics and made a cameo on Scream 4 .

The Scream Award for best horror actor was presented to Anna Paquin by Paul Wesley , Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder .

Personal

Paquin has been dating her serial colleague Stephen Moyer since 2009 . The two play a couple in the series True Blood . The couple were married in Malibu on August 21, 2010 . Paquin also came out as bisexual in 2010 . Paquin is the stepmother of a son (* 2000) and a daughter (* 2002). The couple had twins in September 2012.
