Ian Joseph Somerhalder (born December 8, 1978 in Covington , Louisiana ) is an American actor and former model .

Life

Ian Somerhalder has French , English , Irish and Native American ancestors. His father Robert is an architect, his mother Edna grew up on a pig farm and is a massage therapist. He has a sister and a brother. His parents divorced when he was 13 years old. "Somerhalder" is the last name of the man who became his grandfather by adoption, while his maiden name was "Hull".

Somerhalder attended a Catholic school. With the help of his mother, he started modeling at the age of ten. After working as a model for Calvin Klein , Dolce & Gabbana , Gucci , Versace and Guess , he began an acting career. At the age of 18, he trained as an actor in New York .

In 2004 he had a leading role in the television series Lost , which he left again in the course of the first season. That same year he appeared in a supporting role in the third season of Smallville . Since 2009 he has played the role of Damon Salvatore in the fantasy series Vampire Diaries . Next to him are Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley in the leading roles. The series premiered on September 10, 2009 on the US broadcaster The CW and had a total of eight seasons. In March 2018, Somerhalder announced at Magic Con in Bonn that his next role would be that of a doctor in a Netflix project.

Somerhalder is involved in marine conservation organizations and supports the “Love Letters to the South” organization, which provides financial aid to those affected by Hurricane Katrina . When he saw the consequences of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 , he appealed to his American colleagues to use their fame for a fundraising campaign. A few years ago, Ian Somerhalder set up an organization himself, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation . This organization deals primarily with animal welfare, but also with other projects.

He was in a relationship with his colleague Nina Dobrev since autumn 2011 . However, according to the Los Angeles Times , the two split in May 2013. This was officially confirmed during their appearance at the People's Choice Awards 2014, when they addressed their separation during the acceptance speech. In October 2014, Somerhalder announced a relationship with actress Nikki Reed . The couple's engagement became known in February 2015, after which they married shortly afterwards on April 26, 2015. Their daughter was born on July 25, 2017.
