action

George Monroe is divorced and lives in a completely run-down house in a prime location by the sea. After 20 years with the company, he loses his job as a model builder in an architecture office, collapses shortly after firing and finds out a little later that he has terminal cancer. George only has a short time to live and now finally wants to realize his long-cherished dream of building a new house on the site of the old one. To do this, however, he needs the help of his difficult and drug addicted son Sam, who has long since become completely estranged from him. George hopes that working together will bring them closer again. During the work Sam actually changes, leaves the drugs hands and builds up a closer relationship with his father, with his mother Robin and also with Alyssa, his first love. But George and his ex-wife also get closer again quickly. However, none of the others suspects that George only has such a short time to live. Immediately before his death, George can take a look at the dream house, which his family and other helpers have completed in no time at all, and he remarks: "I have built a new life for myself!"

criticism

Lexicon of the international film : "The predictable calculation of the story and the constant provocation of sentimental feelings overgrow the thoroughly constructive spirit of the story and the occasional attempts at ironic commentary."
