life and career
Jena Malone was born in Nevada. She and her single mother lived in a total of 27 locations near Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas , sometimes in a trailer or family car. Malone wanted to become an actress when she was ten. With nothing to lose, the family moved to Los Angeles with her mother to begin her acting career. After just a few months, she received both a role in Michael Jackson's music video for Childhood and a guest appearance in an episode of Chicago Hope .
Malone made her cinema debut in 1996 at the age of twelve as a victim of abuse in the drama Defenseless - Shadows Over Carolina , directed by Anjelica Huston . The following year she played the lead role in the television production Ellen Foster the fate of an orphan girl. She also preferred mainly dramatic roles and avoided shallow comedies . She became known to a larger audience on the side of Jake Gyllenhaal in the film Donnie Darko .
Due to her preference for more demanding roles, Malone preferred to move in the independent scene. In addition to her leading role, she first acted as a co-producer in American Girl . In the following years she worked with actors such as Kevin Costner , Jodie Foster , Vince Vaughn , Ben Foster , Woody Harrelson and Keira Knightley .
In 2013 she took on the role of Johanna Mason in the science fiction film The Hunger Games - Catching Fire . She took on this role again in the sequels The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 2 (2015).
In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
