The approximately 497 km² large Lake Tahoe is a lake on the border of the US states Nevada and California . The lake was named Lake Bigler until 1862 in the 19th century in honor of the third governor of California, John Bigler . In 1862 the name Tahoe (after dá'aw Washoe for lake ) was introduced and both names were used in parallel. The lake has only been officially called Lake Tahoe since 1945 .

geography

The lake is located west of the 3317  m high Carson Range , an eastern part of the Sierra Nevada .

At 501 meters, the lake is the second deepest and, considering the height of the water level of 1,899.5  m, also one of the highest lakes in the USA. While it is fed by 63 small streams and rivers, the Truckee River drains it . Lake Tahoe has an average depth of 301 m.

Lake Tahoe has lost much of its former loneliness as a result of many years of intensive development on its banks. Nevertheless, it is surrounded by pine forests in a mountainous landscape. It is known for its deep blue water surface. There are several state parks on the banks : Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park in the northeast , Emerald Bay State Park and DL Bliss State Park in the southwest, and Sugar Pine Point State Park in the west .

Improve water clarity

The original clarity of the lake water with an average depth of 30 meters decreased to 19 meters in 2019. The reason for this lies in the increasing growth of algae and other invasive plants.

A pilot project on the south coast of the lake, supported by the University of Nevada, Reno for three years, evaluated a successful way to control the water weeds in August 2020. Using ultraviolet C light treatment, the DNA and the cell structure of these aquatic plants could be permanently damaged. The light body mounted under a ship for this purpose had a dimension of 3.6 × 9.7 meters (12 feet × 32 feet). A larger type is planned for the following year. The ultimate goal is to connect several of these luminaries together so that an area of one morning can be treated per day .

According to the project evaluation, the approach to combating aquatic weeds with ultraviolet light is also a promising instrument for other bodies of water.

Use as a reservoir

Lake Tahoe was transformed into a reservoir , also known as the Lake Tahoe Reservoir , as part of the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District (TCID) project . For this purpose, the Lake Tahoe Dam ( ), a 33 m long dam wall , was built at its drain near Tahoe City on the Truckee River . This dams the lake up to 3.1 m.

Sea monsters

Similar to Nessie in Loch Ness , a cryptozoological sea monster named Tessie is said to live in Lake Tahoe .

In the media

The television series Bonanza is set in the Lake Tahoe area. In the opening credits you can see the location of Ranch Ponderosa between Carson City and the east bank of the lake on a map .

The Corleones mansion in The Godfather II is on Lake Tahoe.

The 53rd episode ( money laundering ) of the television series A Colt for All Occasions takes place on Lake Tahoe.

The 14th episode of the radio play series The Three Question Marks , The Mountain Monster , takes place on Lake Tahoe. The 64th episode ghost town also takes place largely on Lake Tahoe.
