South Lake Tahoe is a city in El Dorado County in the US state of California , United States , with 24,000 inhabitants (as of 2004) and is located on Lake Tahoe .
The urban area has a size of 42.7 km² and is located on US Highway 50 and California State Route 89 .
South Lake Tahoe is the hub of Lake Tahoe tourism . There are some sandy beaches on the outskirts. At the east end of the city is the border between California and Nevada . The " Heavenly Mountain Resort " ski area with 18 lifts is close to this limit . On the Nevada side, the place is called Stateline and consists of several large hotels with casinos .
Olympic preparation 1968
Close to South Lake Tahoe is the Echo Summit ski area, 2249 meters above sea level : a plastic track was built here for US athletes in 1968, where the Olympic Games will be held from September 9 to 17, 1968 Took place in 1968 . The area was chosen because it has a similar elevation to the Olympic city of Mexico City . One month before the Olympic Games, world records were set in the 200- , 400-meter , 400-meter hurdles and pole vaults at Echo Summit . A total of 193 athletes stayed at Echo Summit in the summer of 1968.
After the Olympic Games, the facility became superfluous. It was dismantled and rebuilt as a middle school sports field in South Lake Tahoe. It later weathered and was no longer used.
