Maddison Michelle "Maddie" Bowman (born January 10, 1994 in South Lake Tahoe , California ) is an American freestyle skier . She specializes in the halfpipe discipline and became the first female Olympic champion in this discipline at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Career

Bowman has participated in competitions of the FIS and the AFP World Tour since 2009 . In February 2011 she won her first win at the Revolution Tour in Boreal. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season she won the bronze medal at the New Zealand Winter Games in Cardrona . Later in the season she won the Revolution Tour in Northstar at Tahoe and in the Winter Dew Tour in Killington . She finished second at The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series in Whistler and third at the Winter Dew Tour in Snowbasin . Also in the season she completed her first two FIS World Cup races in Copper Mountain and Mammoth , which she finished in fourth and third place. She won the silver medal at the Winter X Games 2012 . She finished the season in third place in the FIS Halfpipe World Cup and second in the AFP World Tour halfpipe rating. The following season she won The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series at Copper Mountain and the FIS World Cup races at Copper Mountain and Park City . She won the gold medal at the Winter X Games 2013 in Aspen and the bronze medal at the Winter X Games Europe 2013 in Tignes . She took first place in the AFP World Tour overall ranking.

At the beginning of the 2013/14 Olympic season, she finished second at the World Cup in Copper Mountain . This was followed by her third World Cup victory in Breckenridge and another victory at the US Grand Prix in Park City . As in the previous year, she won the gold medal at the Winter X Games . In February 2014 she won the gold medal with 89 points at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in the first halfpipe competition. As in the previous year, she finished the season in first place in the AFP World Tour. In the FIS Halfpipe World Cup she came second. In January 2015 she won the gold medal at the Winter X Games . The following month she won the US Grand Prix in Mammoth . At the Winter X Games 2016 in Aspen , she won the gold medal on the superpipe for the fourth time in a row . In February 2016 she won the World Cup and US Grand Prix in Park City and won the silver medal on the superpipe at the X-Games Oslo 2016 in Oslo . At the end of the season, she won Tignes her fifth World Cup and thus finished third in the Halfpipe World Cup. She won the bronze medal at the Winter X Games 2017 in Aspen . At the beginning of February 2017 she finished second at the World Cup in Mammoth. The following month, she finished fifth at the 2017 Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Sierra Nevada . In the 2017/18 season she achieved five top ten placements, including second place in Mammoth, 16th place in the overall World Cup and fourth place in the Halfpipe World Cup. She also finished third at the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge in December 2017 and won the gold medal at the Winter X Games 2018 the following month . She came eleventh at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang .
