1975: New Elbe tunnel
  • 1975 : The German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt opens the new Elbe tunnel in Hamburg.
  • 1978 : The East Berlin office of the Hamburg news magazine Der Spiegel is closed after a decision by the GDR Foreign Ministry. The magazine had previously reported on an opposition in the country.
  • 1990 : The computer manufacturer Nixdorf is taken over by Siemens .

Disasters

  • 1910 : The British passenger ship Loodiana disappears without a trace on the Indian Ocean after casting off in Port Louis (Mauritius) with 175 people on board. The cause is still unclear today.
  • 1962 : In Peru , massive rock and ice masses break off from the northern summit of Nevado Huascarán . The falling debris avalanche costs at least 2,000 lives.

  • 2017 : FIFA decides that 48 teams will take part in a total of 16 groups of three teams each from the 2026 World Cup . The duration of the preliminary round remains the same, there is also a sixteenth-finals in the knockout system .
