Leonid Makarowytsch Kravchuk ( Ukrainian Леонід Макарович Кравчук , scientific transliteration Leonid Makarovyč Kravčuk ; born January 10, 1934 in Velykyj Schytyn , Volhynia , Poland , today Oblast Rivne , Ukraine ) was the first president of the Soviet Union after the fall of the Ukraine from 1991 to 1994 .

Career

Leonid Kravchuk studied economics and political economy in Kiev and, after graduating in 1958, worked as a teacher at the Chernivtsi Financial Institute. In the same year he joined the CPSU . From 1960 he worked for seven years as a consultant and lecturer in the propaganda and agitation department of the Chernivtsi Oblast Committee of the KPU . He completed his traineeship at the Academy for Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the CPSU and then returned to the Propaganda Department in leading positions. From 1988 to 1990 he rose to the position of Secretary of the Central Committee and became a candidate for membership in the Politburo of the KPU.

At the time of the dissolution of the Soviet Union Kravchuk was parliamentary president - first of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic , then of Ukraine. On December 1, 1991, he was elected the first president of independent Ukraine as a non-party and was put into office four days later. He held the office until he was replaced in 1994 by Leonid Kuchma , against whom he had lost his re-election.

Leonid Kravchuk joined the United Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (SDPU (o)) after his presidency in 1994 and became a board member in 1998. From 1994 to 2006 he was a member of the Ukrainian Parliament . He then left parliament because his party had lost massive votes over the years due to splits and major changes in the political landscape and could no longer make the leap over the 3% hurdle. In 2009 he resigned from the party when, because of its hopeless situation, it decided to join the KPU in the leftist bloc of left forces and to support communist leader Petro Symonenko as a presidential candidate.

The Russians "have considered us to be their estates for 350 years," said Leonid Kravchuk in December 2013 during the unrest on the Euromaidan . During the Crimean crisis , Kravchuk said that Russia would encounter resistance if it took the route of aggression: "I am 80 years old but I will defend my country". The three former presidents of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko and Leonid Kravchuk jointly called on President Putin on June 22nd to stop aggression against Ukraine and spoke of expected “concrete steps” towards de-escalation. They also called on "the mercenaries from Russia" to return to their homeland.
