Petro Mykolajowytsch Symonenko (born August 1, 1952 in Donetsk , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian politician and currently First Secretary (Chairman) of the Communist Party of Ukraine (KPU), as well as chairman of the KPU faction in the Verkhovna Rada .

Life

Petro Symonenko studied at the Donetsk Polytechnic Institute and graduated in 1974 as an electrical mechanic and mining engineer. He then worked as a representative of the Communist Youth Association ( Komsomol ) at the Dondneprougolmasch Institute . From 1982 to 1988 he was Komsomol secretary and then worked within the KPU (then a regional member of the CPSU ) as secretary of the city committee of Mariupol , secretary and second secretary of the Donetsk regional committee of the KPU. In 1991 he completed a further degree in political science in Kiev . After the ban on the KPU in the same year, he worked as the deputy director of the Ukruglemash industrial plant .

In June 1993, Symonenko was elected First Secretary at the KPU's re-establishment convention. Since the parliamentary elections in 1994 , in which the party managed to enter the Verkhovna Rada, Symonenko has also been chairman of the communist parliamentary group.

As a candidate for the KPU, Symonenko took part in the 1999 , 2004 and 2010 presidential elections . In 1999 he received 22.24% of the vote in the first ballot. In the second round he was defeated by 37.80% incumbent Leonid Kuchma , who got 56.25%. In 2004 he was eliminated with 4.97% of the vote in the first ballot.

According to Symonenko, an investigation was initiated against him on suspicion of separatism in August 2014 by the Ukrainian Public Prosecutor Vitaly Yarema .

Private life

Symonenko has been with the journalist Oksana Symonenko, b. Vashchenko married. Symonenko has two adult sons from his first marriage to Svetlana Symonenko, to whom he was married from 1974 to 2009. In his private life, Petro Symonenko plays chess .
