Walentyna Semeniwna Shevchenko ( Ukrainian Валенти́на Семе́нівна Шевче́нко , born March 12, 1935 in Krywyj Rih ; † February 3, 2020 ) was a Ukrainian politician . She was the only female chairman of the presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic .

biography

Walentyna Semenivna graduated from Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev . From 1954 to 1957 she worked as a geography teacher. From 1957 to 1962 she was secretary of the Komsomol in Kryvyi Rih. From 1969 to 1972 she was the Deputy Minister of Education of the Ukrainian SSR. From 1972 to 1975 she was chairman of the Presidium of the “Ukrainian Society for Friendship and Cultural Relations with Abroad”. From 1975 to 1985 she was deputy chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. From March 27, 1985 to May 15, 1990, she was the President of the Supreme Soviet, making her the first and only woman to ever hold this office. She previously held the office on a provisional basis after her predecessor Oleksiy Watschenko died on November 22, 1984. During this time she was also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Ukraine . After the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, she became one of the first political leaders to be accused of "crimes against the Soviet people". Six years after the disaster, the Prosecutor General began criminal proceedings against her. In 1989 she refused to ban the opposition party “ People's Movement of Ukraine ”. She resigned voluntarily a year later. She was the only head of parliament in the history of the Supreme Soviet of Ukraine who voluntarily resigned from office. In the 1990s she was appointed honorary chairman of the National Fund "Ukrainian Children".

Shevchenko was made an honorary citizen of the city by resolution of the Kiev city council on May 25, 2005 .
