Plato Hryhorowytsch Kostjuk ( Ukrainian Платон Григорович Костюк , Russian Платон Григорьевич Костюк / Plato Grigorjewitsch Kostjuk * 20th August 1924 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ; † 10. May 2010 in Kiev, Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian- Soviet politicians, neurophysiologist and biophysicists .

Life

Plato Kostyuk was born in Kiev as the son of the Ukrainian psychologist Hryhorij Kostyuk. He graduated from high school in 1941 at the beginning of the German-Soviet War , where he still learned German and English as a native Ukrainian and Russian speaker. He then began studying biology and philology at the University of Stalingrad . With the advance of the Wehrmacht he was evacuated to Siberia, where he studied medicine until 1945 and was drafted into the military medical service for half a year. To study at the National Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev, Kostjuk was demobilized and studied there until 1946 at the Faculty of Biology. He then worked at the O. O. Bohomolez Medical Institute in Kiev until 1949 , where he graduated as a candidate in biological science.

In 1956 he became head of the Institute of Animal Physiology at Kiev University. In 1957 he received his doctorate in biological sciences and in 1960 he was awarded the academic title of professor . From 1958 he headed the Department of General Physiology of the Nervous System of the Institute of Physiology O. O. Bohomolez of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and in 1966 he became director of the institute. From 1992 he was director of the International Center for Molecular Physiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine .

From 1975 he was a member of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR and, between 1985 and 1990, succeeded Kostjantyn Sytnyk as its parliamentary president . From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Kostjuk was the author of more than 700 scientific publications, including 13 books and 3 textbooks. He died in Kiev at the age of 86 and was buried in the Baikowe cemetery .
