Baikowe Cemetery
The Baikowe Cemetery ( Ukrainian Байкове кладовище Baikowe kladowyschtsche ) is the most important cemetery in the Ukrainian capital Kiev .
The cemetery, which has existed since 1833, has a size of 72.47 hectares and is located in the Holosiyiv district .
history
As one of the oldest cemeteries in the city, the Baikowe cemetery was created in 1833 next to the courtyard of General Sergei Wassiljewitsch Baikow (1772-1848), a hero in the war against Napoleon , and gave the cemetery its name. The cemetery was divided into a section for Orthodox Christians, one for Catholics and one section for Lutherans , with each section having its own cemetery chapel . In the 1880s the cemetery was expanded so that there is an "old" and a "new" Baikowe cemetery, which are separated by a street. After the Askold cemetery was leveled in 1934, the Baikowe cemetery took over its status as the most important cemetery in the city.
Many of the graves in the cemetery were built by famous Kiev architects such as Władysław Horodecki and Vladimir Nikolajew . The Orthodox Church of the Assumption was built from 1884 to 1889 in the Byzantine style from the proceeds of the sale of tombs in the cemetery. In 1975 a new crematorium was built in the western part of the cemetery .
