Hryhorij Hurijowytsch Werowka ( Ukrainian Григорій Гурійович Верьовка * December 13 jul. / 25. December  1895 greg. In Beresna , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 21st October 1964 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian choir director, composer and music professor .

Life

Hryhorij Werowka was born as the son of a farmer / craftsman in Berezna in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernihiv , where he was taught folk songs from childhood. At the age of 10 he was admitted as a choir singer in the episcopal choir in Chernigov . From 1918 to 1922 he studied at the Kiev Institute for Music and Theater Mykola Lysenko in the composition class with Boleslaw Jaworskyj , where he also taught from 1923 to 1929 after his studies.

From 1919 he became the choirmaster of an amateur workers' choir and was already teaching at Kiev schools. From 1939 to 1941 and from 1943 to 1964, from 1947 as a professor, he taught at the Kiev Conservatory . In 1943, on the initiative of the top party leadership of the state, he became the founder, artistic director and until 1964 chief conductor of the Ukrainian People's Choir, which bears his name from 1965 on. Between 1948 and 1952 he was the chairman of the Union of Composers of Ukraine . Werowka wrote numerous cantatas, sonatas and songs, and became famous in the Ukraine and the Soviet Union for his choral arrangements and songs. He died in Kiev in 1964 and was buried in the Baikowe Cemetery .
