The Chernihiv Oblast ( Ukrainian Чернігівська область Tschernihiwska oblast , Russian Черниговская область Chernigovskaya Oblast ) is one of 25 administrative units ( oblasts of Ukraine ) in northern Ukraine . Its population is around 1.07 million (2014). It borders in the northwest on Belarus with the Homelskaja Woblasz and its Rajonen Brahin , Lojeu , Homel and Dobrusch and in the northeast on Russia with the Oblast Bryansk . In the southwest of Chernihiv Oblast is Kiev Oblast, Poltava Oblast in the southeast and Sumy Oblast in the east .
Coming from Belarus, the course of the Dnepr represents the western border with Belarus. The most important river is the Desna , which flows through the oblast in a north-south direction to connect with the Dnieper north of Kiev . Other important rivers are the Snow and Seim .
The main cities of the oblast are Chernihiv , Nizhyn and Pryluky . Historically significant places are Lyubetsch , Novhorod-Siverskyj , Koselets and Baturyn .
