Oster ( Ukrainian Остер ; Russian Остёр Ostjor ) is a city in the southwest of the Ukrainian Chernihiv Oblast with about 6100 inhabitants.

The city is located 111 m above sea level at the confluence of the Oster River with the Desna River in the west of the Koselets district, 18 km west of the Koselets district , 85 km south of the Chernihiv oblast center and 75 km north of the Ukrainian capital Kiev . For the township include, in addition to the city that three villages Beremyzke ( Беремицьке ) Ljubetschanyniw ( Любечанинів ) and Poliske ( Поліське ).
In Oster, the territorial road T – 10–08 crosses with the T – 25–35 , which leads over the Desna.
history
Oster was founded in 1098 by Vladimir Monomakh as a fortress of the Kievan Rus . The fortress was destroyed in 1152 and rebuilt in 1195. In 1240 the village was destroyed again by Mongol hordes during the Mongol invasion of the Rus . At the beginning of the 14th century a new settlement emerged, which came under the control of the Lithuanian principality in 1356 . In 1662 Ostro received Magdeburg city rights . In 1782 Oster became the district seat of the Kiev province and in 1803 the district seat of the Chernigov governorate . In 1861 there were 498 households in the city with a total of 4846 inhabitants.
