Administrative division of Ukraine
The administrative structure of Ukraine is strongly based on the principle of the unitary state . The country is divided into 24 oblasts (singular: область oblast ; plural: області oblasti ), an “Autonomous Republic” (автономна республіка awtonomna respublika ) and two cities with special status (імісто міnслтymo si .

Oblasts
The majority of Ukrainian oblasts are named after the name of their capital, which is also officially known as the Oblast Center (обласний центр oblasnyjzentr ). An oblast center is usually also the largest and most developed city in the respective oblast.
The Ukrainian name of the oblast is formed from the adjective feminine form of the respective oblast center, so the city of Poltava is the center of Poltawska oblast / Полтавська область ( Poltava Oblast ). In most cases the colloquial name is derived from this. This is formed by adding the ending -schtschyna (-щина) and converting the word into a feminine noun. The Poltava Oblast is also called Poltawschtschyna (Полтавщина).
Exceptions are:
- Two oblasts: Volyn (Волинська область Wołyńska oblast ) and Transcarpathia (Закарпатська область Sakarpatska oblast ) with their names on the past in their field historical regions of Volyn and Carpathian Ruthenia point and their main cities of Lutsk and Uzhhorod are,
- the city of Kiev, which as a municipality is independent of the surrounding Kiev Oblast, but is nevertheless the center of this Oblast.

Autonomous Republic of Crimea
The Autonomous Republic of Crimea (Автономна Республіка Крим, Avtonomna Respublika Krym ), officially called Crimea Oblast at the time of the USSR , extends over most of the Crimean peninsula and has the capital Simferopol .
Cities with a special status
The "cities with special status" Kiev and Sevastopol are directly administered by the central government of Ukraine. They receive their status through the administrative division of the former Ukrainian SSR , the exact legal status being determined by special laws.

Rajons
These three national entities are further divided into smaller units, these are normally the Rajons (район rajon ).
Rajons are smaller administrative units in Ukraine. In 2006 there were 490 Rajons spread across the 24 oblasts and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The average Rajon of Ukraine has an area of 1200 km² with an average population of 52,000 inhabitants.
The name of the Rajons is always derived from its Rajonszentrum, but this center is not necessarily part of the Rajons, but can also be under the administration of the Oblast.

Cities
Cities (місто misto ) in Ukraine are subject to either an oblast (місто областного значення misto oblastnoho snachennja ) or a raion (місто районного значення snatschennoho ) misto rajennonnoho . Two, however, are directly subordinate to the central government and are treated as cities with a special status (місто зі спеціальним статусом misto si spezialnym statusom ).
Cities in Ukraine are characterized by the granting of the city statute by the respective administrative unit. Three types of administration can be distinguished:
- City with special status (місто зі спеціальним статусом misto si spezialnym statusom ), are directly subordinate to the Ukrainian government
- City with oblast significance (місто областного значення misto oblastnoho snachennja ), are subject to an oblast administration
- City with Rajon meaning (місто районного значення misto rajonnoho snachennja ), are subject to a Rajonsverwaltung

Rural settlements
The rural settlements still exist as the smallest administrative unit. There are also various intermediate stages, several villages and settlements are often combined to form district administrators. The urban-type settlement is a special form; as a settlement, it must meet special conditions. These smallest units are in turn subordinate to a higher administrative unit, mostly these are Rajons or cities.
The rural settlements (Sg .: сільський населений пункт silskyj naselenyj dot ) are mostly found in the form of a village (село selo ). However, if they are too small for this definition, they are referred to as a settlement (селище selyschtsche ). In order to make the administration of the rural settlements easier, they are grouped into district councils (сільська рада silska rada ), with the seat of the council office determining the name of this municipality:
- Urban-type settlement (селище міського типу selyschtsche miskoho typu )
- Selo (село)
- Selyschtsche (селище)
Territorial municipalities (administrative reform since 2015)
In the course of the reform of the administrative structure in 2015, on the basis of the law “On the voluntary amalgamation of territorial communities”, the formation of territorial communities (Ukrainian Територіальна громада / Terytorialna hromada ) took place, these can take place in different forms between cities, urban-type settlements and villages and are linked to several conditions.
