The Kharkiv Oblast (also Kharkov Oblast ; Ukrainian Харківська область Charkiwska oblast ; Russian Харьковская область Kharkovskaya oblast ) lies in the east of Ukraine and forms the border with Russia ( Belgorod Oblast ) in the north . It has around 2.74 million inhabitants (2013). In the northwest, the oblast is bordered by Sumy Oblast and in the southwest by Poltava Oblast . The Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk oblasts lie on the southern borders . To the east of the oblast is the Luhansk Oblast .
The Seversky Donets flows from Russia coming, the Oblast. On the border with Donetsk Oblast, the river partially forms the border line. Other rivers are the Udy, which flows into the Donets from the right, and its tributary Lopan .

The capital of the oblast is the eponymous city of Kharkiv , the second largest city in Ukraine.
