Birky ( Ukrainian Бірки ; Russian Борки Borki ) is an urban-type settlement in the center of the Ukrainian Oblast of Kharkiv with around 500 inhabitants (2015).
The village, founded in 1659, received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1938 and is the administrative center of the settlement council of the same name within the Nowa Wodolaha district .
Birky is located on the P 51 regional road and the Sevastopol – Kharkiv railway line 17 km east of the Nova Wodolaha district center and 43 km south of the Kharkiv oblast center . At the end of the Soviet Union, the Kharkiv ATEZ ( Харківська АТЕЦ ) nuclear power plant was to be built near the settlement . After the construction of the infrastructure began, the project was canceled.
The settlement council community Birky, which has a total of about 2300 inhabitants and an area of 68.72 square kilometers, yet the villages are Lypkuwatiwka ( Липкуватівка ⊙ ) with about 1500 inhabitants, Rjabuchyne ( Рябухине ⊙ ) with about 150 inhabitants, Wassyliwske ( Василівське ⊙ ) with about 60 inhabitants and Kljutschewodske ( Ключеводське ⊙ ) with about 15 residents.
At the train station in the village of Birky , 8 km to the north, the Borki railway accident took place in 1888 , in which 23 passengers died, the Russian emperor Alexander III who was traveling with them . (Russia) and his family members were not injured.
