Welykyj Burluk ( Ukrainian Великий Бурлук ; Russian Великий Бурлук Veliki Burluk ) is an urban-type settlement in eastern Ukraine and the administrative center of the raion of the same name in the north of Kharkiv Oblast with about 4,000 inhabitants (2017).

Welykyj Burluk is located on the left bank of the Welykyj Burluk , a 96 km long tributary of the Donets . The village is located in the historical region of Sloboda-Ukraine in the center of the Velykyj Burluk Raion, 108 km northeast of the Kharkiv Oblast center and 47 km north of Kupyansk .

history

The first written mention of the village with the then name Shevelivka (Ukrainian Шевелівка ) comes from 1656. In 1672, 390 Cossack families with a total of 755 immigrants immigrated and the place received its current name. In 1923 the village became the administrative center of the newly established Rajons. The village was occupied by Wehrmacht troops from the end of June 1942 to the end of February 1943 . In 1963 Velykyj Burluk received urban-type settlement status.
