Krasnokutsk ( Ukrainian Краснокутськ ; Russian Краснокутск Krasnokutsk ) is an urban-type settlement in Ukraine and the administrative center of the raion of the same name in the west of Kharkiv Oblast with about 7,600 inhabitants (2016).
geography
The place is located in Sloboda-Ukraine 96 km west of the Oblast center Kharkiv on the Merla ( Мерла ), a 116 km long, left tributary of the Vorskla .
In addition to Krasnokutsk, the following settlements belong to the settlement council: Kamjano-Chutirske ( Кам'яно-Хутірське ), Kowaliwske ( Ковалівське ) and Stepowe ( Степове ).
history
The village was founded in 1651 as a fortress to protect the southern borders of the Russian state from Tatar raids. On February 20, 1709, the battle of Krasnokutsk took place on the outskirts of Krasnokutsk , a military conflict during the Russian campaign of Charles XII. took place in the Great Northern War . The village got its current name in 1850. Since 1975 Krasnokutsk has had the status of an urban-type settlement.

Rajon
Krasnokutsk is the administrative center of Krasnokutsk Raion, founded in 1923 . It has an area of 1,040.8 km², a population of about 29,000 inhabitants and a population density of 28 inhabitants per km². It borders on Sumy Oblast in the northwest and Poltava Oblast in the west and southwest .
