The Sumy Oblast ( Ukrainian Сумська область Sumska oblast ; Russian Сумская область Sumskaja oblast ) is one of 25 administrative units ( oblasts of Ukraine ) in northeastern Ukraine . It has around 1.13 million inhabitants (2014). The oblast borders Russia to the north and east (with the Oblasts of Brjansk , Kursk and Belgorod ). The western border lies on the Chernihiv Oblast ; the Desna separates the border in the northern part. In the south, Sumy Oblast borders the Poltava and Kharkiv Oblasts .
