Lebedyn ( Ukrainian and Russian Лебедин , Polish Łebedyn ) is a city in the northern Ukrainian Sumy Oblast with 25,600 inhabitants (2016) about 45 km southwest of the center of Sumy . It is the Rajonszentrum of the Lebedyn Rajons of the same name , but not part of it.
The city is the center of the Rajons of the same name and lies on the banks of the Wilschanka River , a tributary of the Psels . In addition to Lebedyn, the municipality includes the villages Tokari (Ukrainian Токарі , 407 inhabitants), Kudaniwka (Ukrainian Куданівка , 272 inhabitants) and Olexenkowe (Ukrainian Олексенкове , 76 inhabitants). The place has numerous architectural monuments, including a trade council (1868) and the Assumption Church (1769).
history
Lebedyn was founded in 1652 and was the administrative center of a Ujesd in the Kharkov governorate during the Russian Empire . In 1897 there were 14,301 residents in the city, including 95.8% Ukrainians, 2.8% Russians, 0.8% Jews and 0.2% Poles.
The place received the status of the independent city in 1993.

In 1879 the painter and university professor Fedir Krychevskyj and in 1903 the opera and chamber singer Borys Hmyrja were born in the village.
