Buryn ( Ukrainian Буринь ; Russian Бурынь Buryn ) is a city in northern Ukraine in Sumy Oblast . The city has 8,836 inhabitants (2016) and is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .
geography
Buryn is located on the banks of the Tschascha (Ukrainian Чаша ), a 31 km long tributary of the Seim 86 km northwest of the Oblast center Sumy and 23 km south of Putywl , which is also the nearest train station. The municipality located in the north of the Rajon consists only of the city of Buryn itself.
history
The first written mention of the city can be found in the "List of Russian Cities Near and Far" between 1387 and 1392, and at the end of the 15th century the current name is already in use. The village was occupied by Wehrmacht troops on September 16, 1941 and liberated by Red Army units on September 6, 1943 . Buryn has had city status since 1964. In 1992 the city celebrated the 600th anniversary of its founding.

The Buryn Rajon, administered from Buryn, is located in the center of Sumy Oblast. It has an area of 1,100 km² and a population of around 27,100 inhabitants. The population density of the Rajons is 25 inhabitants per km².
