geography
Putywl is located on the right bank of the Seim River , a tributary of the Desna , about 100 km northwest of the Sumy Oblast center and 42 km south of Hluchiw . The municipality consists only of the city of Putywl itself.
history
Originally a town in Sewerien , Putywl was first mentioned in writing in 1146 in the Hypatius Chronicle . Putywl was an important fortress between the opposing principalities of the Kievan Rus Novhorod-Siverskyj and Chernigov and a bulwark against the Cumans , of whom it was besieged unsuccessfully in 1186 , as also mentioned in the song of Igor.
During the second half of the twelfth century and the early thirteenth century, the city was the center of an independent principality.
After the battle of the Irpen against the Lithuanian armed forces of Prince Gediminas , which was lost for the united armed forces of the southern Russian principalities, in 1321 the city could not maintain its defense against the Lithuanians and became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . After the Battle of Wedrosch in 1500, the city was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Moscow . During the "time of turmoil" at the beginning of the 17th century, Putwyl was the center of the uprising of Ivan Bolotnikov and briefly a base for pseudodimitri I.
Until the October Revolution , the city belonged to the Kursk Governorate of the Russian Empire , then to the RSFSR , and from October 16, 1925, the city became part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic . On September 10, 1941, the city was occupied by Wehrmacht troops and became the starting point of the guerrilla war of the Soviet partisans .
