The History of the Cities and Villages of the Ukrainian SSR ( Ukrainian Історія міст і сіл Української РСР, Istorija mist i sil Ukrajinskoji RSR ) is a 26-volume encyclopedia in Ukrainian and partly in Russian , which describes the history of all settled places in Ukraine .

With a decree of the Communist Party of Ukraine of May 29, 1962, a publication of the history of the cities and villages of the Ukrainian SSR was decided and published between 1967 and 1973.

The 26-volume encyclopedia with a total of more than 10,160 articles and references as well as 9,000 illustrations deals with the history of the almost 40,000 Ukrainian cities, villages, regions and districts at the time.

The text of the later Russian version sometimes differs from the previous Ukrainian version and also had the secondary purpose of overwriting the Ukrainian narrative.

The chief editor-in-chief of the group of nearly 100,000 authors was the Soviet- Ukrainian historian and politician Petro Tronko . In 1976 the collective of authors was awarded the State Prize of the USSR . The encyclopedia was compiled by the State Historical Library of Ukraine in cooperation with the Institute of History of Ukraine of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR .
