The Zhytomyr Oblast ( Ukrainian Житомирська область Schytomyrska oblast , Russian Житомирская область Zhitomirskaja oblast ) is an administrative unit in northern Ukraine . It has around 1.26 million inhabitants (2014).
The oblast encompasses part of the historic Volyn landscape . In the east the oblast borders on the greater Kiev area , in the north on Belarus with the Homelskaya Woblasz and its Rajons Leltschyzy , Jelsk and Naroulja Rajonen . To the west of the oblast are Oblasts Rivne and Khmelnitsky , in the south of the Oblast Vinnytsia and in the east the Kiev Oblast . In terms of its area, it is the fifth largest oblast in Ukraine.
The most important transport links from Ukraine to Belarus , Poland and Germany as well as the Slutsch River run through the Oblast . 56% of the population live in urban areas and 90.3% are Ukrainians.

The largest rivers are the Slutsch ( ukr. Случ ), the Ush ( ukr. Уж ), the Teteriw and the Ubort .
The Slutsch with a length of 451 km flows through two more oblasts and then flows into the Horyn . The Ush and Teteriv both flow into the Dnieper shortly before Kiev .

The capital is Zhytomyr , other important cities are Novohrad-Wolynskyj and Korosten .
