Statistical information

The Zakarpattia Oblast (also Sakarpattja Oblast ; Ukrainian Закарпатська область Sakarpatska oblast ; Russian Закарпатская область Sakarpatskaja oblast ) is an administrative unit of Ukraine in the far west of the country. It has around 1.26 million inhabitants (2014). The oblast includes the historical region of Carpathian Ukraine . The capital is Uzhhorod , another important city is Mukachevo .

The densely populated Carpathian Ukraine was long disputed between the then Czechoslovakia , to which it belonged in the interwar period , Hungary and the Ukraine and the Soviet Union . The majority of the population of Carpathian Ukraine is made up of Russians .

geography

In the west the oblast borders on Slovakia and Hungary , in the south on Romania . In the mountainous north, the Polish Eastern Carpathians ( Bieszczady ) border on a small piece , followed by the oblasts of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk . The most important traffic connections run through the oblast in mountain passes over the Carpathian Mountains from Ukraine to southern Europe.

history

The oblast was officially founded by a ukase on January 22, 1946 as part of the Ukrainian SSR and was initially divided into 13 okrugs ; these were converted in 1953 into Rajons of the same name . Since 1991 the oblast has been an integral part of today's Ukraine. As part of the administrative-territorial reform in 2020, the number of Rajons was reduced to 6.

Administrative division

The Zakarpattia Oblast has been administratively divided into 6 Rajons since 2020.
