Swaljawa (Ukrainian and Russian Свалява ; Hungarian Szolyva , Slovak Svaľava , Czech Svalava or Svaljava , German Schwal [l] bach , Yiddish Swaljawy , Swaliwe , Swaljawe , Swaljiwe , Romanian Svalova ) is a town with 17,000 inhabitants (Ukrainian Transcarpathian Oblast ) in the western Ukraine Закарпатська область ). The district town of Rajons Svalyava is located in the valley of the river Latoryzja at the confluence with the river Swaljawka (Свалявка) and you like the village belongs Dratschyno (Ukrainian Драчино, Hungarian Újtövisfalva ).

The main road from Transcarpathia over the Carpathian Mountains to Lviv runs through the valley. Swaljawa is located on the railway line from Mukachevo to Stryj / Lemberg , which was opened in 1887.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing as Zoloa in 1263 and was expanded and developed as Schwalbach by German settlers brought into the Kingdom of Hungary by the Hungarian king . The place is located in the Carpathian Ukraine and shares the history of this historical region, until 1918 Svyava belonged to Bereg County . After the end of World War II he came to the Soviet Union and on May 30, 1947 received the status of an urban-type settlement, in the place a labor camp ("malenkij robot") was set up for ethnic Hungarians and Germans from Carpathian Ukraine and Galicia . In 1957 Svaljava was finally granted city rights.
