Serednje (Ukrainian Середнє ; Russian Среднее / Sredneje , Slovak Seredné or Seredňovo , Hungarian Szerednye ) is an urban-type settlement in western Ukraine ( Zakarpattia Oblast , Uzhhorod District ) about 20 kilometers southeast of the city of Uzhhorod .
The place with about 3500 inhabitants is located at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains in the Transcarpathian lowlands on the river Wjela (В'єла).
history
The place was first mentioned in writing as Zerednye in 1417 . In 1502, István Dobó was born. In 1910 the place in the Kingdom of Hungary in Ung County had 1,867 inhabitants, of whom 881 were Hungarians, 642 Ruthenians, 193 Germans and 134 Slovaks. After the end of the First World War it came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia (as part of the Carpathian Ukraine ) and was ceded to the USSR after the end of the Second World War . In 1971 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement.
The town of Wowkowe to the south-west also belongs to the municipality, and the ruins of Serednje Castle are particularly well-known .
