The Zaporozhye Oblast ( Ukrainian Запорізька область Saporiska oblast , Russian Запорожская область Zaporozhskaya oblast ) is an administrative unit ( Oblast of Ukraine ) in southeastern Ukraine . It has around 1.78 million inhabitants (2014). The Azov Sea forms the southern border of the oblast . The Dnipropetrovsk Oblast embraces the Oblast in the north and northwest. In the southwest the oblast borders on the Kherson Oblast , in the east on the Donetsk Oblast .

Biggest cities
The capital of the oblast is the city of the same name, Zaporizhia , located in the northwest of the oblast on the Dnieper ( Ukrainian Dnipro ).

While official statistics show the proportion of Russian native speakers only at 48.2%, independent statistics indicate a far higher proportion of the population who prefer to speak Russian. Statistics from an institute in Kiev in 2004 showed that 81% of the region's residents prefer to communicate in Russian. Even based on the lowest estimates, Zaporizhia Oblast is one of the centers of the Russian language in Ukraine .
