Kamianka-Dniprovska (Ukrainian Кам'янка-Дніпровська ; Russian Каменка-Днепровская / Kamenka-Dneprowskaja ) is a small town in the oblast Saporischschja in the south-central Ukraine and the administrative center of the same Rajons with approximately 13,200 inhabitants (2016).
geography
The city is located about 135 kilometers southeast of Zaporizhia on the Dnepr , which is dammed up to form the Kachowka reservoir . On the opposite bank of the reservoir in the north is the city of Nikopol .
history
The place was founded in 1786 as Mala Znamyanka (Ukrainian Мала Знам'янка ), in 1920 in Kamjanka na Dnipri (Ukrainian Кам'янка на Дніпрі ) and renamed to its current name in 1944. During the German occupation in World War II , the city was called Kamenka and was the capital of the Kamenka district within the Reichskommissariat Ukraine . In 1957 the town was given town status.
