Melitopol ( Ukrainian Мелітополь ; Russian Мелитополь ) is the center of the raion of the same name in the Zaporizhia Oblast in Ukraine with around 154,000 inhabitants (2018). The city is an important industrial center in the south of the oblast and is located about 60 km north of the Sea of Azov , 110 km south of Zaporizhia and 120 km west of Berdyansk .

history

In 1816 a settlement called Novoalexandrowka was founded on this site . In 1842 it received city ​​rights and was renamed Melitopol.

In Melitopol there was a prisoner of war camp 424 for German prisoners of war of World War II . It was moved here from Nalchik .
