Wessele (Ukrainian Веселе ; Russian Весёлое / Wessjoloje ) is an urban-type settlement in the Zaporizhia Oblast in south-central Ukraine with 10,000 inhabitants (2016).
The place, mentioned for the first time in 1815, is the administrative center of the Wessele Rajons and has had the status of an urban-type settlement since 1957.
geography
Wessele is located between the Kachowka reservoir in the north and the Sea of Azov, 80 km southeast of the town. The Oblast capital Zaporizhia is about 125 km away. The closest major city is Melitopol 38 km southeast of Wessele.
In addition to Wessele, the settlement council also includes the villages Jelysawetiwka (Єлизаветівка), Nowoolexandriwka (Новоолександрівка) and Jasna Polyana (Ясна Поляна).
Rajon
The Rajon Wessele, of which the administrative center is the place, was founded on March 7, 1923. It has an area of 1,129 km² and a population of around 25,000. The population density is 23 inhabitants per km².
