Orichiw (Ukrainian Оріхів ; Russian Орехов / Orechow ) is a city in the Zaporizhia Oblast in southern Ukraine and the administrative center of the raion of the same name . It has about 15,000 inhabitants (2014).
location
The city is located on the left bank of the Kinska River , about 57 kilometers southeast of Zaporizhia . It is about 100 km to the Sea of Azov near Berdyansk in the southeast, and about 70 km to Melitopol in the south.
history
The place was founded in 1783 as a Sloboda ("Free City") for military personnel and builders of the Dneprover fortress line . Already in 1801 it was elevated to a city, this status was renewed in 1938. The city was a center of the Mennonites in the Russian Empire.
