Berdjansk (Ukrainian Бердянськ ; Russian Бердянск ) is a large city in Ukraine with around 115,000 inhabitants (2014). The city is the center of the Berdyansk Raion of the same name in the south of Zaporizhia Oblast on the shores of the Sea of Azov .
With its various combines (“Azov Cable”, “Yushgidromash”, “Azovelmash”, etc.) Berdyansk was an important industrial center and, because of its port, also an important transport hub.
In addition, Berdyansk has been an important spa and bathing resort since the end of the 19th century, with currently more than 600,000 visitors per year.
geography
The city is located on the M 14 / E 58 trunk road , via which Melitopol can be reached after 120 km in a westerly direction. The Zaporizhia Oblast Center is 200 km northwest of the city.
In addition to the actual city, the municipality is divided into the villages Novowassyliwka (Нововасилівка) and Rosa (Роза) as well as the settlement Schowkowe (Шовкове).
To the northeast of the village, the Berda River flows into the Sea of Azov, which is what gave the place its name.
history
In 1827 the city was founded under the name Berdy . In 1835 it was granted city rights and was renamed Berdyansk in 1841 . Between 1939 and 1958 the city was called Osipenko after the aviator Polina Denisovna Osipenko who was born there. Between October 7, 1941 and September 17, 1943, the city was occupied by the German Wehrmacht . During this time Berdjansk was the capital of the Berdjansk district within the Reichskommissariat Ukraine .
In response to the increased Russian presence in the Sea of Azov after the annexation of Crimea in 2014 , a small naval base was established in Berdyansk in 2018. On the other hand, the number of tourists in 2018 was several times the number before 2014.
