Enerhodar ( Ukrainian Енергодар ; Russian Энергодар Energodar ) is a city in southeastern Ukraine with about 54,000 inhabitants (2016). It is located in the Zaporizhia Oblast on the left bank of the Kachowka reservoir on the lower reaches of the Dnieper in the Black Sea lowland . The capital of the oblast, Zaporizhia , is 70 km upstream.

history

Enerhodar Town Hall

The place was founded with the construction of the Zaporizhia fossil power plant on June 12, 1970, making it one of the youngest places in Ukraine. Nameless for the first two years, it was given the name Enerhodar in 1972 and town charter on August 14, 1985.

With the construction of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in 1981, the city is the location of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, which has an output of 6,000 megawatts and is the city's largest employer.

On May 6, 2004, the nuclear power plant hit the headlines when a fire broke out in a weapons depot of the Ukrainian Army , only 40 km away , where old stocks of the Red Army were stored. This was out of control for several days, with artillery shells and anti-tank missiles flying uncontrollably in all directions.
