Nikopol ( Ukrainian Нікополь ; Russian Никополь ) is a city in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in southern Ukraine . Nikopol is the center of the Rajons of the same name and has about 120,000 inhabitants (2012). The port city, which is divided into five districts, is located north of the Kachowka reservoir , which is fed by the Dnieper . Nikopol has been a center of manganese mining and smelting since the 19th century .
history
A Cossack settlement Nikitino received city rights in 1782 and was renamed Nikopol . The grave of the Cossack ataman Iwan Sirko is located in Nikopol . Since the end of the 19th century, Nikopol has developed into an important industrial center.
During the Second World War , Nikopol was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on August 17, 1941 after the attack on the Soviet Union . The manganese mines and smelting works that had previously been destroyed by the Red Army during their retreat were repaired and restarted as far as possible. In 1942, a manganese ore extraction was achieved that was 120,000 tons per month and thus higher than in Soviet times. The manganese smelters were also reactivated and produced around 1,800 tons of pure manganese during the German occupation . In 1942/43 German armaments and steel production was ninety percent dependent on supplies from Nikopol.
Due to the importance of the place, it was particularly fiercely defended by German troops during the Soviet summer offensive in 1943. When the encirclement threatened, General Schörner finally had to vacate the remaining bridgehead on February 16, 1944.
