Vasylkivka

Wassylkivka ( Ukrainian Васильківка ; Russian Васильковка Wassilkowka ) is an urban-type settlement in the east of the Ukrainian Oblast of Dnipropetrovsk with 11,800 inhabitants (2017). The place is the administrative center of the Rajon Wassylkivka and lies on the right bank of the Vowtscha , a tributary of the Samara , 82 km southeast of the Dnipro .

history

The origin of the place goes back to the Cossacks in 1707, who set up a military post here to monitor the Tatars . In 1775 a settlement was founded, the inhabitants of which lived mainly from agriculture and cattle breeding. In 1781 there were about 750 inhabitants. Due to the favorable traffic situation, the village grew rapidly and in 1859 the population was 4,300 and in 1886 already 5552. During the Second World War , Wehrmacht troops occupied the place on October 18, 1941 , which was liberated by Soviet troops on September 17, 1943 . In 1957 Vasylkivka received urban-type settlement status.

Wassylkiwka is the administrative seat of the Rajons of the same name. The Vasylkivka district (Ukrainian Васильківський район ) has 33,665 inhabitants (2012) and an area of ​​1,330 km². The population density is 26 inhabitants per km².
