Vil'nohirs'k ( Ukrainian Вільногірськ ; Russian Вольногорск Volnogorsk ) is a city of regional importance ( місто областного значення misto oblastnoho snatschennja ) in the center of Ukraine , Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with about 23,000 inhabitants (2019).

The city is located 96 km west of Dnipro south of the upper reaches of the 42 km long Samotkan (Ukrainian: Самоткань ), a tributary of the Dnieper .

history

The place, founded on August 12, 1956, was created here as a place of residence for the workers of a titanium mine and the processing combine. On June 16, 1958 he was renamed, derived from the nearby village Wilni Chutory (Вільні Хутори) in Wilnohirsk. In 1965 it received city status and in 1990 city status.
