Marhanets (Ukrainian Марганець ; Russian Марганец / Marganec ) is a city on the right bank of the Dnepr ( Kachowkasee ) in the Ukraine , Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and has about 48,000 inhabitants (2016). The city is an important center for the extraction and processing of manganese ore . The name of the city translates as manganese .

geography

The municipality consists of the town of Marhanets, the urban-type settlement Marjiwka (Мар'ївка) and the settlement Maxymiwka (Максимівка). Marhanez is located 93 km south of the Oblast capital Dnipro and 21 km northeast of Nikopol .

history

The city was founded in 1938 by amalgamating several workers' settlements.

On October 12, 2010 there was a serious traffic accident between a commuter bus and a train, which was on the Zaporizhia – Marhanets railway line . 40 people who were on the bus were killed.
