Verkhnyodniprowsk (Ukrainian Верхньодніпровськ ; Russian Верхнеднепровск / Verkhnedneprovsk) is a city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in Ukraine with 16,400 inhabitants (2016) and the capital of the raion of the same name .
Geographical location
The city is located on the banks of the Dnepr , which is dammed up to the Kamjansk reservoir , and at the mouth of the 42 km long Samotkan (Ukrainian: Самоткань ) in it. The Dnepr-Donbass Canal begins on the opposite bank of the reservoir . The village of Pushkarivka with 3500 inhabitants is located on the opposite bank of the Samotkan. Via the national trunk road N 08 , which runs alongside the village, the south-east located city Kamjanske can be reached after 33 km and in the further course the also south-east located oblast capital Dnipro after 73 km distance.
history
The town was founded in the 17th century as Grigoriwka founded in 1785 Nowogrigoriwka renamed in 1806 officially got its current name and also its town charter. In the 19th century, the city was the administrative center of Ujesd Verkhnedneprovsk , an almost 7000 km² administrative area within the Yekaterinoslav governorate . After the attack on the Soviet Union , the city was occupied by the Wehrmacht and became the capital of the Verkhne-Dnjeprovsk district within the Reichskommissariat Ukraine .

- Vladimir Vasilyevich Shcherbitsky (1918–1990), member of the Politburo of the CPSU from 1971 to 1989.
- Vsevolod Balyzkyj (1892–1937), Soviet revolutionary and politician. Head of the NKVD of Ukraine during the Holodomor and People's Commissar for Internal Affairs of the Ukrainian SSR .
In addition, the Marxist revolutionary and first wife of Leon Trotsky , Alexandra Lvovna Sokolovskaya was born here in 1872.
