The Samara ( Ukrainian Самара ) is a left tributary of the Dnepr and flows through the steppe area of southern Ukraine . It has a length of 320 km and a catchment area of 22,600 km².

From its source in the western Donets Ridge (ukrain. Donezkyj krjasch) in the Donetsk Oblast , the river flows through the Oblasts of Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk , before flowing into the Kamjansk reservoir near Dnipro , which is used for irrigation and fish farming.

The average flow rate near the mouth is approx. 20 m³ / s. The amount of water is very variable because the river is mainly fed by the snowmelt. The water level falls in the upper reaches, and the Samara is dry in summer, with swamps in places. The gradient of the river is generally very low at 0.33 m / km, so that further swamps can be found in the middle and lower reaches of the river, which shape the bank. The width of the river is between 40 and 60 m and reaches 300 m at its widest point. The lower reaches of the river are navigable.

The most important tributaries are the Vovcha and the Byk (left bank). The larger towns on the river include Oleksandrivka , Pavlohrad , Ternivka and Novomoskowsk .
