The Ternopil Oblast ( Ukrainian Тернопільська область Ternopils'ka oblast ; Russian Тернопольская область Ternopolskaja oblast ) is an administrative unit of Ukraine in the west of the country. It has around 1.07 million inhabitants (2014).
The Oblast includes part of the historic landscape of Galicia , but the northeastern Rajone included Kremenez , Shumsk , Lanivtsi and places north of the line Mala Beresowyzja (Мала Березовиця) - Kobyllja - (Кобилля) Iwantschany (Іванчани) - Hlyntschuky (Глинчуки) - Nowyky ( Новики) - Tschornyj Lis (Чорний Ліс) - Kapustynskyj Lis (Капустинський Ліс) - Kapustynzi (Капустинці) - Synjawa (Синява) in Sbarash district at the end of the existence of Galicia in 1918.
It borders in the northwest on the Lviv Oblast , in the southwest on the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast , in the south on the Chernivtsi Oblast , in the east on the Khmelnitsky Oblast and in the north on the Rivne Oblast .
The capital is Ternopil , other cities are Chortkiv , Kremenez and Bereschany . In total, the Oblast comprises 17 Rajons with 15 cities and 17 urban-type villages, the area is 13,823 square kilometers. The area is sparsely populated with around 1000 villages (1.07 million inhabitants, approx. 2.3% of the total population of Ukraine); their economy is shaped by agriculture: in 1997 over 60% of the gross national product was generated by agriculture, almost 30% by industry.
history
The oblast was established as Tarnopol Oblast (Ukrainian Тарнопольська область / Russian Тарнопольская область) after the occupation of eastern Poland by the Soviet Union as part of the Ukrainian SSR per Ukaz on December 4, 1939, from the Voivodeship of the Polish Voivodeship and a part of the Voivodeship in the south of Poland . Initially, the following formerly Polish powiate ( Ujesd in Russian ) were retained:

- Borschtschow / Borszczów (Борщевский уезд)
- Butschatsch / Buczacz (Бучачский уезд)
- Saleschtschiki / Zaleszczyki (Залещицкий уезд)
- Sbarasch / Zbaraż (Збаражский уезд)
- Sborow / Zborów (Зборовский уезд)
- Kremenez / Krzemieniec (Кременецкий уезд)
- Kopytschinzy / Kopyczyńce (Копачинский уезд)
- Podgaize / Podhajce (Подгаецкий уезд)
- Skalat / Skałat (Скалатский уезд)
- Tarnopol (Тарнопольский уезд)
- Trembowlja / Trembowla (Трембовлянский уезд)
- Tschertkow / Czortków (Чертковский уезд)
After deliberations on January 10, 1940, the Ujesde was dissolved on January 17, 1940 and replaced by the following Rajons (the Russian names are given as they reflect the official names of the time):

- Gusjatin district with Gusjatin district center (Гусятин)
- Katrynburg district with Katrynburg district center (Катрынбург)
- Rayon Koslow with Rajonszentrum Koslow (Козлов)

Then there were the independent cities of Bereschany, Buschatsch, Kremenez, Tarnopol and Tschertkow.
In June 1940, there have already been some changes to the Rajonen from Rajon Bereschze was Rajon Kremenez from Rajon Katrynburg of Rajon Velyki Dederkaly from Rajon Kosiv of Rajon Biloboschnyzja and from Rajon Ustje-Selene of Rajon Koropetz .
However, the oblast was dissolved again after Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, the area was largely absorbed in the Galicia district and could only be restored after the area was recaptured by the Red Army in 1944.
On August 9, 1944, the oblast was renamed in analogy to the renaming of the oblast capital in Ternopol Oblast / Oblast Ternopil .
In 1959 some Rajons were amalgamated, at the end of 1962 there was a major territorial reform, this was corrected again in 1965, at the end of 1966 the Ternopil Rajon was founded, which by and large completed the administrative structure.

The Ternopil Oblast is administratively divided into 17 Rajons as well as a city directly subordinate to the Oblast administration, the Oblast capital Ternopil .
