Chortkiv ( Ukrainian Чортків ; Russian Чертков Chertkov , Polish Czortkow , German rarely Tschortkau ) is a city in the Oblast Ternopil in western Ukraine with about 28,000 inhabitants. The city is located south of the oblast capital Ternopil on the banks of the Seret River .

After the collapse of the Danube Monarchy at the end of the First World War in November 1918, the city was briefly part of the West Ukrainian People's Republic . In the Polish-Ukrainian War , Poland occupied the last parts of the West Ukrainian People's Republic in July 1919. On November 21, 1919, the High Council of the Paris Peace Conference awarded Eastern Galicia to Poland for a period of 25 years.

The city was called Tschertkow ( 39ертков ) after the Soviet occupation of eastern Poland in 1939 , this name was changed to Tschortkow / Tschortkiw by ukase on August 9, 1944.
The city was under district administration until September 19, 2013 and was placed under oblast administration from that day.
