biography

After finishing school, Machno studied at the Pedagogical University of Ternopil and then taught there. In 1995 he received his doctorate here with his dissertation on the Polish-Ukrainian writer Bohdan-Ihor Antonytsch . Machno's first volumes of poetry and prose were published while this work was being prepared for printing in 1999. In the late 1990s he taught at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow . In 2000 he moved to New York with his wife and daughter . Here he works for the Shevchenko Scientific Society and maintains contact with the Ukrainian poets of the "New York Group".

In December 2016, Machno was one of the signatories of the appeal of the Berlin International Literature Festival "End the mass murder in Aleppo!" , Which is directed against the "bombing war by Russian President Putin in the Syrian city ​​of Aleppo ".

Machno, like most contemporary Ukrainian writers, writes both poetry and prose. He received his initial impetus from the work of the Ukrainian writer Bohdan-Ihor Antonytsch , who was the subject of his dissertation. Like him, Machno cultivates complex imagery and dense word structure. His texts are cleverly interwoven word and atmospheric structures that are reminiscent of old hole doilies crocheted with fine thread. Machno trusts his readers to enrich the individual linguistic images and notes with their own feelings and experiences, to sound out nuances and also to understand the silence. He is free of traditional romantic notions of poetry, he dissolves stereotypes and maintains a great concentrated brevity right down to the punctuation. The theme of Machno's work is the measurement of the space between home and the uncharted territory of the world of New York, which he explores curiously archaeologically and opens up to readers in their strange diversity. After volumes of essays and short stories, his magnum opus, the novel “Ewiger Kalender”, was published in autumn 2019. On 652 pages it follows the “rivers” from Shabbtai Zvi to Sascha Blonder , from Stambul to western Ukraine .
